KEY STORYLINE
This week in “Serena”, Merella Fernandez, CTV News Channel Correspondent on special assignment to W5, sits down with Canadian rock star and six-time JUNO Award winner Serena Ryder, who opens up about her music, career, and battle with bi-polar disorder, anxiety, and depression. Ryder discusses her life in the spotlight and on the road, and how it triggered the most traumatic time in her life.

Fernandez guides viewers on a journey throughout Ryder’s musical career, from her first concert at age eight, at the Legion in her hometown of Millbrook, Ont. and her debut album Falling Out, produced when she was only 17-years-old, to her breakout hit song “Weak in the Knees,” and her first JUNO win.

W5 spotlights some of Ryder’s biggest hits, including “Stompa”, which topped charts in the U.S. and Canada, and attained triple-platinum status in Canada with more than a quarter-million copies sold. Unprecedented access takes viewers behind the scenes as Ryder works on her newest songs and prepares for an upcoming concert tour.

W5 hears from a slate of fellow musicians and artists, including two-time Grammy® and Oscar® Award winner Melissa Etheridge, a close friend and confidante of Ryder’s who shares stories of the duo’s early careers. Fernandez also speaks with Grammy-winning producer Om’Mas Keith and fellow musician Simon Wilcox, discussing Ryder’s talent and voice, and provide updates on Ryder’s hotly anticipated next album, Utopia.
