HAMILTON (February 5, 2018) – TSN and Mohawk College announced today that TSN 1150 Hamilton and the college are partnering on a new, immersive Sports Broadcasting Course for students enrolled in Mohawk’s Radio Broadcast Program. Launched last week, the course features in-class instruction from veteran TSN 1150 broadcaster Jim Tatti, plus hands-on, practical training from the station’s program director, Michael Nabuurs.

Students enrolled in the course develop strategies and collaborate in the planning and preparation of accurate sports radio broadcasting. The course also features a partnership between Mohawk, TSN 1150, and the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs to provide students an opportunity to create game reports and participate in post-game media scrums. Students are required to complete a capstone project with TSN 1150, which could include producing player profiles, hosting talk shows, or voicing sports news updates for the station. During a pilot course in the Winter 2017 semester, a student-run talk show was hosted at the station throughout March and April of 2017, a tradition TSN 1150 hopes to continue.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Mohawk College to help provide practical experience for students looking to work in sports radio broadcasting,” said Michael Nabuurs, Program Director, TSN 1150 Hamilton. “This was a natural partnership, and we are glad to be in a position to open this door for students, and impart insight and real-life opportunities.”

“Experiential learning is a hallmark of a Mohawk College education,” said Kurt Muller, Associate Dean of Media and Entertainment at Mohawk College. “Our students will be working with, and learning from, top professionals in sports broadcasting, while covering the Hamilton Bulldogs. We’re confident this partnership with TSN 1150 and the Hamilton Bulldogs will help them develop the skills they need to succeed.”

“The Bulldogs are pleased to support this program. It seems like a perfect hat trick between the three organizations,” said Peggy Chapman, Hamilton Bulldogs Senior Director of Operations. “With our strong relationship with TSN as the voice of the team, this is a great opportunity for Mohawk students to learn their broadcast skills, and for our players to gain more experience being interviewed.”

The course is exclusively offered to Mohawk’s Radio Broadcast students in the last semester of their final year. The program, with more than 60 students enrolled annually, gives students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and specialize in all aspects of the radio broadcasting industry, including news and sports presentation, production, promotion, sales. The course concludes with a work placement following their final semester.

TSN 1150 has an expansive lineup of live sports, featuring the Hamilton Bulldogs, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, McMaster Marauders, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Toronto Raptors, plus live coverage of major championship events, including the Grey Cup, World Juniors, Super Bowl, and more.

TSN 1150 is available on AM 1150 in the Hamilton area, online at TSN1150.ca, as well as via the TSN GO and iHeartRadio apps.
