Synopsis

An unconventional way to watch a crime unfold, MOTIVE pieces together the clues of a murder as each episode begins by revealing not only the victim, but the killer as well. It’s an intense cat-and-mouse game as the homicide team sets off to piece together clues from the crimes committed. How did they do it? How are the victim and killer connected? What’s the motive? As the mystery unfolds, winding between revealing flashbacks and present time – viewers navigate the twisted and complicated maze of each murder, solving the puzzle alongside Detective Angie Flynn and her team.

"The Vanishing Policeman"

In the Season 4 premiere of MOTIVE, Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman) and Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) adjust to his new role and their changed work dynamic. The suicide of an officer who Angie and Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) worked with on a crime scene turns the team’s investigation into a hunt for a cop killer. New detective, Mitch Kennecki (Victor Zinck Jr.) joins the team and the investigation. Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) guest stars.

Meanwhile, Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) and Dr. Betty Rogers (Lauren Holly) attempt to have a seemingly normal morning until work snaps them back to reality. Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) finds himself attracted to one of the witnesses in the case and must decide if he’s willing to cross a line. Will Sasso (MAD TV) guest stars.

Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman) and the team are called to investigate a gruesome murder, but when the signature appears to be the same as a case Detective Paula Mazur (Karen LeBlanc) previously investigated, it could mean an innocent woman was convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. While Angie and Paula investigate different leads, Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) must mediate without playing favourites, while Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) plays the diplomat trying to support both detectives.

While being held hostage, Angie enlists the help of Detectives Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) and Paula Mazur (Karen LeBlanc) to reinvestigate the case, while Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) tries to help from the Command Post outside.

At the end of Season 3, Vega (Louis Ferreira) was wheeled into surgery where Angie kept her word and was there when he woke up. With the team short-handed in Vega’s absence, Angie stepped in, working hard to balance her duties as detective and Acting Staff Sergeant until Vega’s return to the role.

Season 4 picks up months later, just before Vega’s return. Angie continues to redefine her role within Homicide, and while Vega’s time away has allowed her partnership with Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) to flourish, they are all eager to have Vega back – even though Angie will have to adjust to calling her best friend “boss.”

This season finds Angie adjusting to new partners – first Detective Mitch Kennecki and then, Detective Paula Mazur. Angie finds herself stepping up as a mentor and a friend, which proves to be an impactful personal and professional milestone for her. But over the course of the season, Angie watches as others change, and realizes she’s been making surface changes, trying to take a leap of faith while hanging on to the edge of the cliff. It’s time to let go and see what, or who, catches her.

After his successful surgery at the end of Season 3, Vega took a medical leave to recover. The beginning of Season 4 sees Vega returning to the squad in the role of Staff Sergeant, and happily still in a relationship with Dr. Betty Rogers (Lauren Holly).

Vega believed his new role would allow him to function as a shield for the officers in his unit, enabling his team to do their best work
unencumbered by political and management issues. But once he’s behind the desk, he comes to realize his expectations are a far cry from the reality of the job.

While understanding his new position is not without its problems, Vega is determined to make lasting, positive changes within the
Homicide department. But when his superiors aren’t happy with his decisions, he begins to wonder if he needs to leave policing behind and find fulfillment somewhere else.

Cast Bio

Louis Ferreira is a Portuguese-born Canadian actor best known for his roles in STARGATE UNIVERSE, BREAKING BAD, DURHAM COUNTY, MISSING, and Saw IV.

Ferreira won a 2008 Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for his work portraying the serial killer Ray Prager in DURHAM COUNTY, and in both 2014 and 2015, won the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for his performance in MOTIVE.

In 2009, Ferreira appeared in the HBO award-winning film GREY GARDENS opposite Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. Other film work includes playing Sarah Polley’s partner in Dawn of the Dead, as well as roles with Mark Wahlberg in Shooter, and The Lazarus Child.

With a resume including over 110 onscreen credits, Ferreira played Donald Trump in TRUMP UNAUTHORIZED, was a lead in the miniseries THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, and in 2011 he became known as “The Voice of Mazda,” voicing a series of commercials for their national campaign for two years.

While Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman) and Staff Sergeant Vega (Louis Ferreira) find themselves embroiled in personal and
professional conflict, this season finds Lucas enjoying his heyday as a detective. He’s putting all his focus into work and it’s paying off for him in spades.

Throughout Season 4, Lucas will find his personal boundaries being challenged. He succumbs to temptation on the job and must live with the consequences, and when he coerces an informant to come forward as a witness, he puts Vega in an extremely difficult position.

Born in Ottawa, Brendan Penny’s other starring credits include the Tom Lynch produced show THE ASSISTANTS, and CTV’s WHISTLER. He is also featured in the award-winning web series THE TRUE HEROINES, the feature film The Virginian, and the mini-series RING OF FIRE.

Penny has guest-starred on numerous television series including THE KILLING, FLASHPOINT, SUPERNATURAL, and THE L WORD, and in 2014 starred in the TV movies ALONG CAME NANNY and HEAVENLY MATCH.

Penny currently resides in B.C. with his family.

At the end of Season 3, Dr. Betty Rogers watched as Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) was wheeled into surgery. The start
of Season 4 finds their relationship still going strong, especially as they make a concerted effort not to let their work life interfere with their personal one.

The pressures of Vega’s new position aren’t lost on Dr. Rogers, whose own experiences navigating the bureaucracies in the police department prove to be incredibly helpful. While Dr. Rogers’ relationship is smooth sailing, she will face one of her toughest professional challenges: testifying against the man who assaulted her when only her testimony can convict him.

Lauren Holly’s breakthrough motion picture performance came in the box-office smash, Dumb and Dumber, with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, followed by glowing reviews for her performance in the Edward Burns drama No Looking Back. Her numerous film credits include Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday, with Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, and Jamie Foxx, Sydney Pollack’s Sabrina, starring
Harrison Ford, the action-drama Turbulence, costarring Ray Liotta, and Beautiful Girls.

Holly boasts three seasons as Director Jenny Shepard in the drama series NCIS, and starred as plastic surgeon Jeremy Hanlon on David E. Kelley’s Emmy® Award-nominated drama CHICAGO HOPE. Her work on the series marked her second project with Kelley, following their successful collaboration on the critically acclaimed Emmy Award-winning series, PICKET FENCES.

Additional film credits include lead roles in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, recently released Marshall the Miracle Dog and After the Ball, as well as feature roles in A Smile Like Yours, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Down Periscope, Entropy, Field of Lost Shoes, and The Last Producer, starring and directed by Burt Reynolds.

Holly can also be seen in Hoovey, as well as the upcoming feature film How To Plan An Orgy In A Small Town (2016), and Never Can Say Goodbye: When Love and Hate Survive Death.

Detective Paula Mazur – Karen Leblanc

Detective Paula Mazur is everything the team needs – shrewd, detail-oriented, and self-assured, without being cocky. Bringing a bulldog like tenacity to her job, she’s a “just the facts” detective through and through. She has no interest in making sympathetic connections with killers, and little interest in making any kind of personal connection with her colleagues. Mazur works hard to compartmentalize her career and personal life, having seen too many officers let the job dominate their lives. But as time goes on, her efforts put a strain on her relationship with Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman), and when one of her old cases comes back to haunt her, Mazur’s self-assured poise suddenly turns to self-doubt.

Karen LeBlanc is a multi-talented performer whose credits span film, television, and stage. LeBlanc’s television credits include X COMPANY, SHATTERED, DEFYING GRAVITY, REGENESIS (for which she was nominated for a 2008 Gemini Award for Best Actress), BATTLE STAR GALACTICA, CRACKED, TRAILER PARK BOYS, SAVING HOPE, RUNAWAY, THIS IS WONDERLAND, PLAYMAKERS, THE RIVER, and ENDGAME among others. On the big screen, LeBlanc can be seen in the upcoming feature film Mobile Homes, and has appeared in Short For Nothing, High Chicago, the independent feature Make It Happen, Dolan’s Cadillac with Christian Slater and Wes Bentley, and Nurse.Fighter.Boy for which garnered her a 2009 Genie Award for Best Actress. LeBlanc is also an accomplished singer and stage performer with credits including lead roles in Mirvish Productions’ Rent and the Canadian Stage production of Outrageous. She has also entertained audiences around the world as Tina Turner in Legends In Concert, which led to her on screen portrayal of “Young Tina Turner” in THE PLAYBOY CLUB.
