TORONTO (August 19, 2015) – HBO Canada presents a provocative tale of ego, exploitation, and lust for power in the captivating documentary, GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright. Academy Award®-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) profiles eight former members of the Church of Scientology, whose most prominent followers include A-list Hollywood celebrities, detailing their experiences and what they were willing to do in the name of religion. GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF premieres Sunday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada.

GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF examines the Church’s origins, from its roots in the mind of founder L. Ron Hubbard to its rise in popularity in Hollywood and beyond. The heart of the film is a series of shocking revelations by former insiders, including high-ranking and recognizable members such as acclaimed screenwriter Paul Haggis (Crash, SHOW ME A HERO), as they describe the systematic history of abuse and betrayal by Church officials, including the current leadership of the Church.

The documentary is written and directed by Alex Gibney and based on the book by Lawrence Wright. The film is produced by Gibney, Kristen Vaurio, and Lawrence Wright; edited by Andy Grieve; and director of photography is Samuel Painter.

In Eastern Canada, the film will be available on TMN GO and HBO Canada OnDemand. In Western Canada, it will be available on the go with Shaw Go Movie Central appBell TV appTelus Optik on the go, and HBO Canada On Demand.

HBO Canada is a multiplex channel of Bell Media’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada).
