Synopsis

The consequences of the bold Black Wolf Company heist on Fort James have come with swift and vicious ferocity, and from the highest offices in London. FRONTIER Season 3 sees the agents of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) violently cracking down on everyone, from Montréal to the wilderness, but the business of the Black Wolf couldn’t be further from Declan Harp’s (Momoa) mind. After Lord Benton (Armstrong) abducted Grace Emberly (Boyle) and set sail from James Bay, Harp set out on a treacherous rescue mission to get her back, which takes him far from the frontier. After the successful heist of the HBC in Fort James, Michael Smyth (Liboiron) sets out to reassemble the Black Wolf Company – or what’s left of it. But the fallout is swift and furious, and the HBC crackdown has many feeling that Smyth’s head should end up on someone’s platter. Refusing to let his newfound infamy be his downfall, Smyth instead uses it as a sales pitch, stopping at nothing to seek out new alliances and build a team that can finally rival the might of the HBC. But when Smyth learns one of his new partners has a dark side business which challenges his humanity, it pushes him into a decision that could make all his risky work go up in flames. Sokanon’s (Matten) break from the Black Wolf in the wake of Wahush’s death has her rejecting the trade in favour of protecting her people, especially Indigenous women who are being bought and sold around James Bay. As the ale house brothel in Fort James is a way station for some of them, Sokanon enlists the help of Mary (Breanne Hill) to outwit Imogen (Diana Bentley). But clever power player Imogen is always a half-step ahead, putting Sokanon and Mary in a terrifying battle for their lives. In Montréal, a brutal shakedown by the HBC leaves the businesses of fierce competitors Samuel Grant (Shawn Doyle) and the Brown Brothers in shambles. Josephette DaCosta (Karen LeBlanc) fears that Douglas Brown’s (Hawco) emotions will run Carruthers & Co. into the ground and employs Malcolm (Patric) in a deception to try and save the company. The stress and anger forces Grant to leave the city for a time, leaving Cobbs Pond (Bryk), to keep the business intact, by any means necessary. While the men are away, Clenna Dolan (Lyla Porter Follows) connects with someone outside the confines of the Grant household in a risky relationship that could be her undoing.

Declan Harp (Jason Momoa)

Harp’s promised war on Benton begins, and Season 3 opens with Harp lashing back at the HBC and Lord Benton in brutal retaliation for Grace Emberly being taken from Fort James. Desperate to get her back before Benton can kill her like he did his family so many years ago, Harp cuts a path through the Frontier to find them. No element will stop him, and he starts out on a grueling trek which will take him from the snowy expanse of the mountains, across the cold dangers of the Atlantic to the Old World to get her back – and hopefully, the revenge he’s been carrying for Benton for all this time. Harp’s drive to find Grace is matched only by his desire to make Benton pay, and Harp quickly assembles a new ragtag crew to join him and fight with him on his possibly suicidal journey.

Michael Smyth (Landon Liboiron)

Michael Smyth (Landon Liboiron)

Michael finds himself with a target on his back after his successful heist of the HBC. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one – every operator and trader in the frontier is being stripped of their furs and supplies as punishment –and it’s widely known Michael is the one to blame for the wrath. But where others see risk, Michael sees opportunity for the independents to start building a rival empire to beat the Company. He is a gambler, a risk taker and confident in his steps. But his own Black Wolf Company is foundering with the shifting priorities of his partners, so he is forced to seek out partnerships with some truly unlikely people to take over Fort James. Already hurting from Sokanon’s absence and from his part in her pain, Michael will make end up making things worse when one of his business decisions makes him complicit in something far more insidious than he realized.

Lord Benton (Alun Armstrong)

Having bested Harp at the end of Season 2 and successfully absconding with Grace Emberly in his firm grip, Benton’s sinister manipulations are on full display across land and ocean, as he lures Harp back to the Old World. Using both Emberly and Harp to get what he wants, Benton thinks he has it all wrapped up. But he may be too clever by half when he miscalculates the temerity of his opponents and his plan twists against him, leaving him vulnerable to the kind of bloody revenge he is so skilled at meting out.

Grace Emberly (Zoe Boyle)

Grace Emberly (Zoe Boyle)

Kidnapped by Benton at the end of Season 2, Grace Emberly continues to be held captive by the loathsome Lord Benton. While in a seemingly hopeless situation, Grace does her best to maintain her strength, is always on the lookout for opportunities to deploy her charm and cunning in order to gain back her freedom. When she finds an ally in Chaulk, she thinks she may have found her way out, but she’s up against a force in Lord Benton. When he finally reveals his intentions for her, Emberly sees the chance to advance her own cause – but it will most certainly mean sacrificing something important to her in the bargain.

Sokanon (Jessica Matten)

Sokanon (Jessica Matten)

Still furious over the death of Wahush at the end of Season 2, Sokanon no longer wants
anything to do with Michael. Sokanon shifts her focus from the fur trade and its brutal
injustices and pours her grief into action, setting off on a mission to free Native women
from the shackles of white men in the New World. She learns of a trader, O’Reilly, who
seems to be at the centre of the business of brides in the Bay. Sokanon quickly learns he’s a
formidable foe, with unexpected allies of his own – resulting in Sokanon pulling even
farther away from the people for whom she once felt deep and loyal affection.

Douglas Brown (Allan Hawco)

Douglas Brown (Allan Hawco)

Heartbroken over the unexpected and violent death of his wife Elizabeth Carruthers,
Douglas struggles to decide what’s good for the business. Obsessing over the fact that he
knows Grant killed his wife, he’s sure of it, and getting comfort from whatever bottle of
booze is closest at hand, Douglas is spiralling in his discomposed grief and leaving
Josephette DaCosta to worry about his allegiances and his ability to run the company. While
Douglas sees more of Clenna, who is now a key member of the Grant household, his
motivations become muddied as his connection to her grows stronger.
