Special to The Lede

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi has a great haunted-house scream.

It’s so sharp, and piercing, and seemingly out of nowhere, it even makes some of her co-investigators jump back in SNOOKI: THE PARANORMAL ROOKIE, which premieres Friday, Oct. 2, with two episodes on Crave.

So has anyone ever told Snooki that she missed her calling as a so-called “scream queen?”

“Well, I'm told that I'm always loud, so I guess so,” she said. “But yeah, when I scream, I’m genuinely scared. And throughout this entire process, I was so excited to do it, because it's on my bucket list to be a paranormal investigator. But also, I was terrified, because I'd never really done something like this with pros before. So I’m already terrified going into it. Then I hear a noise. I'm on edge. So I scream a lot because I'm nervous.”

SNOOKI: THE PARANORMAL ROOKIE follows the reality-TV icon (JERSEY SHORE) as she finally leans into her lifelong connection and unwavering belief in the spirit world. With no formal paranormal training, Snooki joins an expert team – featuring internationally acclaimed psychic medium Kevin Whitaker, occult expert and historian Missy Morrow, and paranormal tech specialist Todd Thomas – as they look for ghosts (or “ghosties,” as Snooki calls them) at reportedly haunted sites across Ontario.

In a joint interview, Snooki and Whitaker set the dark and spooky scene:

Q: Snooki uses the term “ghosties” instead of “ghosts.” This show is quite creepy at times, but “ghosties” seems to cut the tension a bit. Where did that come from?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “I just feel like when it comes to ghosts, I want to treat them like I would people. So instead of trying to invade their space, and be annoying, I want to be bubbly to them, and be like, ‘hi, ghosties! I'm here. I want to chat.’ I want to bring a different vibe than the normal way that you see paranormal investigators go into it. I want the ghosts to have fun and be chill, so we can get some stuff.”

Q: Kevin, in your line of work, do you get the sense that the spirits are just messing with us a lot of the time?

KEVIN WHITAKER: “Definitely. There are times when a ghost either pretends to be something that they're not, or as we're engaging, we're not getting the entire picture all at once, and so we have to be careful that we're not presuming too much. But there are certainly those spirits who are just out to, you know, grant you a scare, or to mess around with who they are, and where they're from, those types of things. There are some spirits who give me everything, I can see them, hear them, I can identify where they're from, what time, and I feel like I have a reasonable engagement. And then there are some spirits who aren't accustomed to being connected with at all. We had one such location that had no paranormal history, and we really visited that place just to test the theory, and the spirit there caught me off guard completely, only because the presentation was frightening. I think that spirit frightened the entire crew. At one point Nicole looked at me and said, ‘are you scared?’ And I was like, ‘I'm a little bit rattled.’ It felt like it was the first time in 15, 20 years that I could honestly say that.”

Q: Even from the first episode to the second episode, Snooki seemed more comfortable with all this stuff. Is it fair to say she became less scared?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “I think I needed to get the gist of it. I went in really nervous, on top of being worried that I was going to get touched by a ghost, because I feel like I always do. Then once we did the first episode in the first location, I was like, all right, it's still scary, but I feel cozy with my co-stars, and I know they have my back, because I do get scared. So I guess I felt more comfortable as it went on, but I mean, I'm still scared. That's why I have spirit juice. Spirit juice is my wine, and I have a nice glass of wine to calm my nerves. And also I feel like when I do have a glass of wine, it opens up my third eye, which is weird. So, like, I can feel the ghosties more. I don't know, I just get more out of the experience.”

Q: Kevin, what’s the biggest misconception about what you do?

KEVIN WHITAKER: “For me personally, I find that a lot of people suppose that everything I encounter is evil or negative, or that I have a fascination with the evil or negative. And really, I'm very welcoming of that wholesome, cool, ‘Casper the Friendly Ghost’ spirit being there. I'm just fascinated by what we find out, and advancing the evidence that I think people need to see.”

Q: Was there anything about doing this show that you didn’t foresee?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “Coming from reality TV, and making sure we capture what we need to, it was way harder than I thought it would be to show what we're feeling, because sometimes you kind of have to be there to feel it. So we needed to get into the habit of saying what we were feeling out loud, or describing what we felt was around us, or what was going on, because you're not really physically getting it as a viewer unless it's on the recorders, or whatever they’re called.”

KEVIN WHITAKER: “Yeah, we have so many devices, like the SLS (Structured Light Sensor), to demonstrate a spirit in stick form. Sometimes too, adding to what Nicole was saying, we can express what we've seen, but there's a degree of, like, ‘trust me, bro.’ When we're sharing that we've had an experience with a spirit, or I've seen what I see, the audience is kind of left to believe what I've said. So it's beautiful to have Todd Thomas, he's our tech guy, come back and maybe after the investigation, after we've left a location, he's like, ‘hey, listen to what I picked up at three in the morning at this pioneer church,’ We then have the evidence supplied by him upon review.”

Q: So much of this series was essentially shot in the dark. How challenging was that?

KEVIN WHITAKER: “I'll tell you what I really appreciate about it, and it was more like a creative choice, I think, by Nicole, our executive producer, and the people behind the scenes. It’s that, rather than have the night-vision cameras that you see in most ghost-hunting shows – we're guilty of it on DARK DEALINGS as well, if you see me on YouTube, we've got the night-vision cameras and stuff – but this was shot a little bit different, with as little light cast on us as possible. I think it's important to plunge yourselves into the dark as much as we can. This one looks so different, and it's just absolutely stunning and gorgeous.”

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “When we're in the club, it's dark. So I've filmed in the dark a lot (Kevin laughs). But I feel it wasn't that hard, because you have the big lights from the cameras, so you kind of see where you're going. We have the flashlights and everything. But like Kevin said, I definitely wanted a different feel than all the night-vision greens that are always on these types of shows. I wanted it to be legit. You're in the dark with us. Like, you're there. It's scary, it's spooky, and you're seeing it the way we're seeing it.”

Q: Snooki, you made a fascinating observation that one of your gauges of comfort is asking yourself, “could I sleep in this room?” Have you always had that?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “Yeah, ever since I was little growing up, I just felt things in my room, I felt things in the other room, I felt things walking down the hallway, I felt things outside. So I was never fully comfortable in a room unless, you know, I made the ambiance nice, and the blinds were shut. I just always felt like I was never alone in a room. So even now, going to hotels, just this past week I was in L.A., and I went in the hotel room, and I was like, this is creepy. I feel like somebody's here. So I always feel like there are ghosties walking around, and I never feel alone. So especially going on these ghost hunts, obviously we're not alone in these places. So I might say, ‘I don't think I could sleep in here, definitely not, the energy's heavy.’”

Q: Have you ever actually switched hotel rooms because of those feelings?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “Yeah, I think once. I think it was in L.A. a long time ago. I just couldn't sleep, and I felt like someone was staring at me. You know I love my sleep, and I wasn't getting sleep, so I actually had to switch rooms because it didn't feel cozy in that room.”

Q: Finally, what do you think are some of the best fictional representations of ghosts, in TV and movies?

NICOLE “SNOOKI” POLIZZI: “Well, I'm a zombie girl. I'm always a horror girl. So when I want to chill, I put on zombies. I put on World War Z, or THE WALKING DEAD. But when it comes to paranormal and ghosts and demons, I feel like The Conjuring (available on Crave) is one of the best, and I feel like it's the most accurate. And also, when you read about the filming of The Conjuring and the sequels, there are always crazy things that happen on set to the actors and the production crew.”

KEVIN WHITAKER: “Of the two I hold up, The Conjuring also makes my list. I love the suspense and the true paranormal, entity interaction. Also, Insidious was one that really gave me chills, because it so strikes on some of the spirit encounters that I've had that were mostly negative. I'm not much for horror/slasher-type movies. I'm just out when it comes to that. But one of my earliest loves for fiction and the paranormal was Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I love how those spirits were introduced, especially the ghost of Christmas yet to come. It really impressed me. I'm like, ‘that's pretty dang accurate.’”

Special to The Lede

In the early creative stages of HBO’s WAR, the feuding legal teams were referred to unofficially as the “goodies” and the “baddies.”

This was news to star Dominic West, when those terms were openly utilized during a recent news conference promoting the show.

“But who's the good and the bad?” he asked, perplexed. “I didn't realize there was a good team and a bad team.”

“That means you’re on the bad team,” quipped creator, writer, and executive producer George Kay.

The fact is, who the audience is cheering for may well switch back and forth over the course of WAR, which premieres Thursday, Oct. 1 on Crave. But even for those who remain as neutral as a judge, it’s a heck of a battle.

WAR pits West (THE CROWN, THE AFFAIR, THE WIRE), playing a high-profile tech mogul named Morgan Henderson, against his wife Carla Duval, a successful actress played by Sienna Miller (ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL, THE LOUDEST VOICE, The Girl), in a London, England-set divorce case that takes many acrimonious twists and turns. Also fully exposed are the legal teams working relentlessly and sometimes underhandedly for their clients, with Morgan represented by an old-style firm called Cathcart and Sons, and Duval represented by a younger firm called Taylor & Byrne.

“I think on-set we did fall quite comfortably into our camps, and we really shot most of this series with our respective law firms, Dom and I particularly,” Miller said. “So when we got to court, we were on opposite sides, but it was heaven, because we loved each other, and we could all hang out and be children in the green room. But it definitely felt like ‘us versus them.’”

West added, “I suppose the whole process of the case is that they're walking on this knife edge between love and war, and the lawyers are trying to push them into war.”

So did West ever go so far as to feel any empathy for the other side?

“No, not in the least,” he said.

The impetus for the story came about in a humorously random way, according to Kay.

“I was wanting to do a legal show, and I had this idea to do a show between two law firms warring with each other every season,” Kay said. “But I hadn't really found a case to tell across Season 1. So I was in this queue and minding my own business, when the woman behind me on the phone – who was a quite affluent woman, quite put-together, and sort of a strong character – started saying the word, ‘yes’, over and over into the phone. And then finally she screamed the word, ‘YES!’, and hung up.”

So what did Kay do?

“I turned around, because I'm a nosy man, and I asked her what had happened,” Kay continued. “And she said, ‘the bastard signed!’ She then told me about her four-year rollercoaster divorce, and how she was so physically relieved by this news that it was finally over. I thought, ‘maybe this is the beginnings of an idea for Season 1.’”

While nasty divorces are nothing new, they can take on an extra layer of animosity when there’s so much money involved, and public reputations are on the line. Neither Morgan nor Carla is necessarily a bad person in WAR, but they’re capable of doing bad things, and then digging in.

“George said to me, ‘(Morgan) is a benign billionaire,’” West recalled. “And I looked into billionaires. There are two and a half thousand in the world, and three of them are good. There's a really good podcast called Good Bad Billionaire, and they identified three good ones. They're usually the ones who give everything away. Most of them are just ordinary billionaires. Some are the most evil people on the planet. So it was interesting to try and find the line. (Morgan) is trying to set up a social media platform that does good. He's trying to acknowledge his wife's minimal role in setting up the business and, you know, give her tens of millions. He's trying to do the right thing, and so that had me rooting for him. And then George gives me an amazing, ruthless, horrible, bullying scene. It was great to play those two things.”

Miller came up with a great way to describe Carla, who, as a famous actress, is used to being the centre of attention.

“I think she’s someone that doesn't particularly invest in other people's energy in her orbit – she’s very much orbiting herself,” Miller said. “So she is very confident at the beginning. But then the gloves really come off. I think she's wrong-footed, she's reactive as a person, she doesn't do well with being backed into a corner. I think I have those qualities. I think I respond in a potentially kinder way to feeling defensive, but she's quite vicious, and I like that about her. That’s what makes for great TV.”

To borrow an old expression, viewers should hope for peace, but prepare for WAR.

TORONTO (September 24, 2026) – The 113th Grey Cup will deliver an unforgettable celebration of Canadian pride, sport and music, featuring some of the country’s most beloved artists alongside world-class action and entertainment.
Calgarians and Canadian Football League (CFL) fans from coast to coast to coast will witness Canadian music icon Sarah McLachlan perform the national anthem as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds return to Grey Cup for their final flight. Canadian music legends Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo will give a special guest performance, and award-winning Canadian country music group James Barker Band will cap off the pre-game festivities in the SiriusXM Grey Cup Kickoff Show. Global country music star Riley Green will headline Canada’s most-watched musical performance in the Bud Light Grey Cup Halftime Show.
“From national treasures to global stars, this year’s Grey Cup entertainment lineup reflects what makes the CFL special: homegrown excellence, world-class talent and a uniquely Canadian celebration on our biggest stage,” said CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston.
The 113th Grey Cup will be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sunday, November 15 with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT. The championship contest and the Bud Light Grey Cup Halftime Show will be broadcast live across the nation on TSN, CTV, RDS and Crave. It will be available internationally on the league’s free livestreaming platform, CFL+. A limited number of tickets are available at Ticketmaster.
From November 11 to 15, the Cenovus Energy 2026 Grey Cup Festival will feature a full slate of free and ticketed events celebrating football, music and community spirit. Fans can look forward to concerts, family-friendly activities, cultural showcases and a chance to get closer to the Grey Cup than ever before. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit greycupfestival.ca.

Riley Green knows his way around the gridiron, having played quarterback for the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks before making his mark in country music. Known for his down-to-earth style and relatable songs, the singer-songwriter has earned six No. 1 hits at Canadian country radio, including 3x-Platinum “There Was This Girl,” and the 6x-Platinum “Worst Way,” as well as infectious duets with some of the world’s most celebrated country stars, including “Different ’Round Here” and “Don’t Mind If I Do.” His recently released fourth studio album, That’s Just Me, features lead single “Think As You Drunk,” along with follow-ups “Go Again” and “Imagine That.”
“We’ve spent a lot of time touring across Canada over the past several years, and the fans up there have always shown up for us in a big way. I’m excited to finally get to experience a Grey Cup and be part of the energy surrounding it. Getting to perform at halftime in front of that crowd is going to be a hell of a time, and a pretty special way to wrap up what’s been a really wild year!” said Green.
Green’s success has earned him five Academy of Country Music Awards, including Top New Male Vocalist in 2020. He continued that momentum in 2025, emerging as one of the biggest winners at the 59th Annual Country Music Association Awards, where his duet with Ella Langley, “You Look Like You Love Me,” took home Song of the Year, Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Now, headlining the Bud Light Grey Cup Halftime Show adds another major television credit to a standout 2026 for Green. The appearance follows his acting debut in Marshals and his role as a coach on the 30th season of The Voice, which premiered September 21 on CTV.
“For the sophomore Bud Light Grey Cup Halftime Show, it felt only appropriate to bring the brand’s passion for country music to this year's musical stage,” said Andrew Oosterhuis, Marketing Vice President, Labatt Breweries of Canada. “With Calgary and Canada’s love for country music, we couldn’t think of a better artist to entertain football fans during the most-viewed, live-music performance in the country.”

There are few more quintessentially Canadian songstresses than Sarah McLachlan. Her storied career has spanned nearly four decades with countless No. 1 hits, drawing critical acclaim and adoring fans around the globe. Her tenth studio album, 2025’s Better Broken, including the title track, “Gravity” and “Reminds Me,” returned one of the country’s most beloved artists to the national spotlight. Her trophy case bears Grammy Awards and Canada’s highest musical honours, including multiple JUNO Awards, East Coast Music Awards and Western Canadian Music Awards in recognition of her stunning catalogue and her exquisite songwriting.
A member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, McLachlan also serves as a tremendous ambassador for her home and native land through her philanthropic and community efforts, garnering the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. She is a Member of the Order of British Columbia and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
"It's always such an honour to perform our Canadian anthem. There's nothing like that connection with an entire stadium, united and singing together with so much joy and pride. And to do it on the Grey Cup stage in Calgary once again will be truly special, I can't wait," said McLachlan.

Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor formed Blue Rodeo in the mid-1980s, embarking on a legendary musical journey that has garnered numerous No. 1 singles and 12 JUNO Awards, including five for Group of the Year. Blue Rodeo has been inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and they were the fifth band to be honoured with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Cuddy and Keelor were inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024 and they have also been made Officers of the Order of Canada.
"Ever since I was young, Grey Cup weekend has held a special place in my heart – from watching it with my dad, to celebrating with high school friends and family, and now having the chance to perform. I'm beyond excited to be part of it all in Calgary!” said Cuddy.
Their performance marks a triumphant return to a Grey Cup in Calgary for the famed Canadian duo, where Blue Rodeo starred as the halftime act in the 97th edition of professional Canadian football’s championship in 2009.

James Barker Band broke onto the Canadian country scene in 2015, winning the Emerging Artist Showcase at the Boots and Hearts Music Festival. The Woodville, Ont., act has spent the past decade delivering the band’s signature small-town sound to the national stage, earning multiple No. 1 hits in Canada, including “Chills,” “Keep It Simple,” “Over All Over Again,” “New Old Trucks” and “Meet Your Mama.” Their first full-length release, 2025’s One of Us, features their sixth single to reach the top of the charts, “You Didn’t Hear It From Me,” which was supported by the fan-favourite Bud Light Buckle Up Tour across the country.
The band is a two-time JUNO Award winner for Country Album of the Year. They recently took home their fourth consecutive Group or Duo of the Year, as well as Fans’ Choice at the 2026 Canadian Country Music Association Awards in addition to bringing their unmistakable charm and personality as hosts for the ceremony.
"We had a chance to attend Grey Cup last year in Winnipeg and it was such a party. So, this year when they asked us to play the Kick-Off, it was a no-brainer. Excited to head out to Calgary and team up with such an amazing line-up of Canadian and global icons!" said Barker.
“Supporting Canadian artists is at the heart of what we do and The SiriusXM Grey Cup Kickoff Show is an incredible opportunity to elevate Canadian music,” said Rob Keen, SVP, Customer Lifecycle, Marketing & Partnerships, SiriusXM Canada. “Our longstanding partnership with the CFL allows us to showcase homegrown talent on one of the country’s biggest stages, while bringing together fans through the shared energy of music and sport.”

TORONTO, Sept. 23, 2026 – In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, hundreds of broadcasters in Canada are coming together for the sixth year in a row to amplify Indigenous voices with A DAY TO LISTEN 2026. Produced by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) in partnership with Orbyt Media, the 12-hour broadcast airs on radio stations throughout Canada on Wednesday, September 30, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (local time).

JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter William Prince takes the lead as the host of A DAY TO LISTEN to share stories and interviews with Indigenous community leaders, experts, artists, creators, Elders, and more.

This year’s theme is Honouring Truth with Action. Honouring truth means listening to the lived experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples and acknowledging the lasting impacts of the residential school system and other colonial policies. But listening is only the starting point. A DAY TO LISTEN 2026 explores how learning the truth can inspire meaningful action and contribute to reconciliation in communities throughout Canada.

"As we mark the 10th anniversary of Gord Downie’s Secret Path, we’re reminded of the impact we can have when people listen to the truth, and choose to act," said Sarah Midanik, President & CEO of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund. "Through Secret Path, Gord helped bring Chanie Wenjack’s story and the truth about residential schools into the national conversation, inspiring people throughout Canada to take action. This year’s A DAY TO LISTEN is an opportunity to build on that legacy, coming together throughout the country to honour truth and consider how we can turn that into meaningful action to move reconciliation forward.”

"It is an honour to continue our partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund on the sixth annual edition of A DAY TO LISTEN, especially as we mark the 10th anniversary of Secret Path," said Heidi Baiden, Senior Manager at Orbyt Media. "This impactful broadcast brings together radio stations across Canada to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, sharing these vital stories and interviews with listeners."

Listeners are encouraged to visit downiewenjack.ca throughout the day to explore educational programming, such as the Legacy Schools program, which provides educators with free tools and resources to teach not only the true history of residential schools but also the richness, strength, and diversity of Indigenous cultures. DWF is an Indigenous-led national charity working to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Listeners can learn how they can Do Something to move reconciliation forward by visiting downiewenjack.ca.

The first A DAY TO LISTEN took place on June 30, 2021, following the announcement of 215 potential unmarked graves at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. More than 540 radio stations participated in the inaugural edition of the broadcast, spanning a multitude of markets, regions, and formats.
