SEPTEMBER 1 – BACKCOUNTRY *Canadian Movie Premiere*
- Streaming Wednesday, September 1 is the critically-acclaimed survival thriller BACKCOUNTRY. Loosely-based on the true-story of an Ontario couple’s wilderness nightmare, BACKCOUNTRY follows Alex (Jeff Roop, A KILLER IN MY HOME) and Jenn (Missy Peregrym, VAN HELSING), who have left the big city to go camping in the country. After setting off into the woods, and realizing they’ve forgotten their cellphones, the trip takes a turn for the worse when they find themselves in the territory of a hungry man-eating black bear.
SEPTEMBER 1 – CANDYMAN (1992) *Movie Premiere*
- Urban legends tap into a college student’s greatest fears in Bernard Rose’s 1992 cult-classic film CANDYMAN (1992), streaming Wednesday, September 1 on STARZ. A prequel to the highly-anticipated Candyman (2021), released in cinemas this month, CANDYMAN (1992) is one of the first films to use the horror genre to discuss racism and segregation, with a legacy that has gone on to inspire films such as Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen, Sideways) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Estelle Williams, New Jack City) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago’s Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd, FINAL DESTINATION), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbours believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman’s description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.
