Bell Media and Its Partners Collect 55 Awards at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards

TORONTO (April 1, 2019) – Bell Media applauds its production partners, team members, and talent on their outstanding achievements at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. Securing a total of 55 awards across television, film, and digital during Canadian Screen Week, Bell Media continues to be recognized for its championing of remarkable original Canadian content.

Bell Media and its partners won more awards than any other broadcaster at last night’s closing gala, including acting category wins for CARDINAL and LETTERKENNY, and Best Reality/Competition Program or Series for THE AMAZING RACE CANADA.

Overall, Bell Media was recognized with 34 Canadian Screen Awards in television and digital categories, more than any other private broadcaster, while Bell Media-supported films captured 21 additional awards.

CTV’s acclaimed Canadian drama series CARDINAL, from Sienna Films and eOne in association with CTV, secured a total of seven awards, tied for the most CSAs for any television series, including Best Limited Series or Program; Best Lead Actor, Drama Program or Limited Series for Billy Campbell; Best Lead Actress, Drama Program or Limited Series for Karine Vanasse; Best Direction, Drama Program or Limited Series for Jeff Renfroe; and Best Writing, Drama Program or Limited Series for the episode “Red,” written by Sarah Dodd.

The Crave original series LETTERKENNY, from New Metric Media, won in five significant categories, including Best Direction, Comedy, and Best Writing, Comedy for the third year in a row. Series creator and star Jared Keeso won Best Lead Actor, Comedy

CTV’s THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, from Insight Productions, also took home five awards, including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series for the fifth year in a row; Best Direction, Reality/Competition; and the Golden Screen Award for TV Reality Show.

Bell Media projects landed the two main documentary awards, with the Crave Original Documentary ANTHROPOCENE: THE HUMAN EPOCH, from Mercury Films, securing the Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary award, and the Bell Media Original Documentary YOU ARE HERE: A COME FROM AWAY STORY, from M.D.F. Productions, taking home the award for Best Documentary Program.

Original series on Bell Media’s entertainment specialty channels were recognized with three awards this year. Space’s WYNONNA EARP, from SEVEN24 Films Inc., secured the award for Best Achievement in Make-Up for Joanne Jacobsen, while Dominique Provost-Chalkley took home the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award. Comedy’s smash-hit original series CORNER GAS ANIMATED, from Vérité Films, won the award for Best Writing, Animation for the episode “Squatch Your Language,” written by series creator and star Brent Butt.

Winning for its highly successful inaugural digital special, ETALK LIVE: THE OSCARS BALCONY, hosted by Danielle Graham and Lainey Lui and produced by Bell Media Studios, secured Best Host, Web Program or Series.

After securing 18 nominations, TSN once again led all other sports broadcasters, scoring seven wins in the eight categories they were nominated in, including Best Sports Host for James Duthie (FREE AGENT FRENZY); Best Sports Play-By-Play Announcer for Chris Cuthbert and Best Direction, Live Sports Event for Andy Bouyoukos (2017 GREY CUP); and Best Sports Analyst for Jack Armstrong (Raptors Basketball on TSN).

CTV News received three awards in major news categories, with CTV NATIONAL NEWS WITH LISA LAFLAMME once again receiving the coveted Best National Newscast award for the second year in a row (and the fourth time since 2014). CTV NEWS TORONTO AT SIX won Best Local Newscast and co-anchor Michelle Dubé was named Best News Anchor, Local.

Bell Media-supported films won 21 awards, led by The Great Darkened Days | La grande noirceur, which secured five awards including Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for Sarah Gadon, Achievement in Art Direction, and Achievement in Cinematography. A Colony | Une colonie won three awards, including Best Motion Picture, Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Émilie Bierre, and the John Dunning Best First Feature Film Award. Support for films comes from The Harold Greenberg Fund/Le Fonds Harold Greenberg, as well as pre-buys and acquisitions from Bell Media’s Crave and Super Écran.
