TORONTO (May 29, 2020) – Bell Media applauds its production partners, team members, and talent on their outstanding achievements at the 2020 Canadian Screen Awards. With Canadian Screen Week unfolding as a series of unique virtual presentations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bell Media continues to receive accolades for its creation of and support for compelling, original Canadian content, securing a total of 57 awards across television, film, and digital categories, as well as the Academy’s Special Awards. Overall, Bell Media was recognized with 37 Canadian Screen Awards in television and digital categories, more than any other private broadcaster. Eighteen awards went to Bell Media-supported films, several of which are available now for streaming on Crave, including Best Motion Picture winner Antigone and The Twentieth Century. More CSA winners, including And the Birds Rained Down / Il pleuvait des oiseaux and the Crave Original Film The Song of Names, are coming to Crave this summer. “We are as proud as ever of our Bell Media team and partners, who continue to deliver outstanding, original Canadian content that fascinates, educates, and entertains our audiences,” said Randy Lennox, President, Bell Media. “Our warmest congratulations to all of our winners and nominees, and a sincere thanks to Beth Janson, Louis Calabro, and the phenomenal team at the Academy. Their tireless efforts to virtually mount Canadian Screen Week resulted in a unique and inventive way to celebrate the industry and bring us all together at this challenging time.” The third season of CTV’s acclaimed Canadian drama series CARDINAL, from Sienna Films and eOne in association with CTV, secured a total of seven awards, the most for any television series, including Best Drama Series; Best Lead Actor, Drama Series for Billy Campbell; Best Lead Actress, Drama Series for Karine Vanasse; Best Supporting Actress, Drama Series for Kristen Thomson; and Best Writing, Drama Series for the episode “Mama,” written by Patrick Tarr, Noelle Carbone, and Aaron Bala. CTV’s THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, from Insight Productions, took home six awards, including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series for the sixth year in a row; Best Host or Presenter, Factual or Reality/Competition for Jon Montgomery; and the Golden Screen Award for TV Reality Show. Additionally, MARY’S KITCHEN CRUSH, from Proper Television, took home two awards: Best Lifestyle Program or Series and Best Host, Lifestyle for series star Mary Berg. Original series on Bell Media’s entertainment specialty channels were recognized with six awards this year, led by CTV Comedy Channel’s smash-hit original series CORNER GAS ANIMATED, from Vérité Films, Sparrow Media, Aslan Entertainment, and Smiley Guy Studios, winning awards for Best Animated Program or Series; Best Performance, Animation for series creator and star Brent Butt; and Best Writing, Animation for the episode “Hedge Your Debts” written by Diana Frances.  The Crave original series LETTERKENNY, from New Metric Media, won two awards: Best Direction, Comedy, and Best Writing, Comedy for the fourth year in a row. Bell Media Studios programs were honoured with a multitude of awards, including two first-time wins – for ETALK as Best Entertainment News Program or Series, and for THE SOCIAL as Best Talk Program or Series. Melissa Grelo, host of Bell Media Studios’ highly successful special BELL LET’S TALK LIVE, was recognized as Best Host, Web Program or Series, and Discovery’s DISASTERS AT SEA was honoured with Best Factual Series. TSN once again won more Canadian Screen Awards than all other sports broadcasters combined, scoring six wins including Best Sports Host for James Duthie (FREE AGENT FRENZY); Best Sports Play-By-Play Announcer for Matt Devlin and Best Live Sports Event for 2019 NBA FINALS GAME 6; Best Sports Program or Series for TSN Original documentary 29 FOREVER, and two awards for the network’s acclaimed documentary series ENGRAVED ON A NATION. CTV News received five awards, with CTV NATIONAL NEWS WITH LISA LAFLAMME once again receiving the coveted Best National Newscast award for the third year in a row (and the fifth time since 2014). CTV News captured Best Live News Special; two awards for W5, including Best Host or Interviewer, News or Information for Avery Haines; and Best Host, Talk Show or Entertainment News for QUESTION PERIOD’s Evan Solomon. Bell Media-supported films won 18 awards, led by Antigone, which secured five awards including Best Motion Picture, Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Nahéma Ricci, and Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for Nour Belkhiria. The Crave Original Film The Song of Names also won five awards, including Achievement in Overall Sound and Achievement in Music – Original Song for “The Song of Names (Cantor Prayer)” by Howard Shore. Mark O’Brien was recognized with Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his role in Goalie, and Rémy Girard won Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for And the Birds Rained Down  /  Il pleuvait des oiseaux. Support for films comes from The Harold Greenberg Fund/Le Fonds Harold Greenberg, as well as pre-buys and acquisitions from Bell Media’s Crave and Super Écran.  Additionally, the Academy’s Special Award recipients for 2020, which will be awarded later this year, include Bell Media’s premium streaming service Crave (Industry Leadership Award), for its innovation and leadership in Canada’s media industry; and Anton Koschany, Executive Producer of CTV News’ acclaimed documentary program W5 (Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism), for his exceptional body of work in television journalism.
