TORONTO (January 23, 2018) – Bell Media today congratulates The Breadwinner on its Academy Award® nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. This international co-production has been garnering rave reviews and a series of high-profile awards and nominations since it had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, including six Canadian Screen Award nominations. The Breadwinner received development and equity support from Bell Media’s The Harold Greenberg Fund and is a pre-buy for The Movie Network. The 90th Academy Awards ceremony is broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 4, 2018, exclusively on CTV. “Congratulations to everyone involved in The Breadwinner on today’s fantastic Oscar nomination,” said John Galway, President, English-Language Program The Harold Greenberg Fund. “We are so proud of our involvement with this truly wonderful story and send best wishes to our friends at Aircraft Pictures on this achievement.” Directed by Nora Twomey, written by Canadians Anita Doron and Deborah Ellis, and executive produced by Mimi Polk Gitlin and Angelina Jolie, The Breadwinner is based on Ellis’ best-selling novel that tells the heartwarming story of Parvana, a girl in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, who must dress as a boy so she can support her family. Distributed in Canada by Elevation Pictures, The Breadwinner is playing in select cinemas across Canada now and will come to The Movie Network this summer. Following its TIFF premiere, The Breadwinner has garnered wide acclaim and multiple awards and nominations. Called “a hand-drawn gem . . . [that] sings and inspires” by The Globe and Mail, The Breadwinner’s numerous accolades include a Golden Globe nomination, and recognition as the Best Animated Film by the Toronto Film Critics Association and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. The Breadwinner is also nominated for six Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture.
