Bell Media Takes Home Top Honours at 2019 RTDNA National Conference Gala

TORONTO (May 11, 2019) – Bell Media congratulates its team members on being honoured for outstanding achievements in electronic and digital journalism at the 2019 RTDNA National Conference Gala, held this evening in Toronto. Bell Media won a total of 16 awards at this evening’s event, bringing the tally of 2019 National and Regional RTDNA awards to 44.

CTV NATIONAL NEWS WITH LISA LAFLAMME was honoured with the Bert Cannings Award for Best Network Television Newscast for their coverage of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy. CTV News Toronto’s CTV NEWS AT SIX was recognized with the Bert Cannings Award in the National category of Best Newscast, Large Market. Canada’s most-watched documentary series, W5, was awarded the Trina McQueen Award for Best Network Television News Information Program for “Hot Wheels” and “Suspect Zero”, as well as the Dan MacArthur Investigative Multiplatform Network Award for the story “No Witnesses.”

CTV News also received two National Dave Rogers Awards for both short feature and long feature: CTV Edmonton for the long feature “Highway to Alaska”, and CTV Kitchener for the short feature “Garbage Man”.

TSN was honoured with five Network awards: the Gord Sinclair Award for Best Live Special Event (Humboldt Broncos Season Opener Pre-Game), Best Sports Feature Reporting (Mystery of Paul Ranger), the Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award (The Shift), the Hugh Haugland Award for Excellence in Video (Out Of Nowhere), and the Ron Laidlaw Award for Continuing Coverage (Digital) for the network’s CTE coverage on TSN.ca.

In the radio categories, Victoria’s CFAX 1070 won the National Gord Sinclair Award for Best Live Special Event, recognizing their ELECTION NIGHT 2018 broadcast, as well as the National Sam Ross Award for Adam Stirling editorial commentary.

The RTDNA’s prestigious President’s Award was presented to the RTDNA Regional Chairs, a group that includes four CTV News Directors: CTV Atlantic’s Dan Appleby, CTV Windsor’s Manny Paiva, CTV Vancouver’s Les Staff, and CTV Saskatoon’s Jill Smith, for their accomplishments in bringing recognition and distinction to the field of electronic and digital journalism. Former CTV News Vice-President and General Manager Joanne MacDonald was also honoured Friday night with the Lifetime Achievement Award for exemplary service and continued excellence during the course of her career in journalism and news management.
