Team Red Head Coach: Chris Cheng Cheng was named head coach of Men’s Basketball at Nipissing University in 2013 at the age of 28, at which time he was the youngest head coach in Canada’s U Sports (then Canadian Interuniversity Sport). He previously served as men’s varsity assistant coach with the York University Lions from 2008 to 2012, guiding the team to a playoff appearance in all five seasons. As the head coach of Ontario Basketball’s 17U Boys Team, Cheng’s teams captured back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012, and he was named the 2011 Ontario Basketball Men’s Elite Coach of the Year. In addition to his coaching duties at Nipissing, Cheng maintains his involvement with Canada Basketball Development Programs and National Teams. Assistant Coach: Charles Hantoumakos Hantoumakos is the head of the prep basketball program at Bill Crothers Secondary School, which plays in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association. Hantoumakos is a pioneer for the prep basketball movement in Canada. He built one of the country’s first prep basketball programs and has helped countless student athletes earn scholarships. Team Liaison: Nathan Johnson Team Manager: Younis Hussein High Performance: Cedric Carter Athletic Therapist: Eric Matias Strength and Conditioning: Tyler Robbins Team White Head Coach: John Campbell Campbell became the head coach of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball program in 2013 after 11 years as the Dalhousie Tigers’ bench boss. During that time, he guided the Tigers to two AUS championship titles (2008-09, 2010-11) and earned Atlantic University Sport (AUS) coach of the year honours in 2010-11. Prior to Dalhousie, Campbell served as head coach of the Laurentian Lady Vees women’s basketball team, where he captured two Ontario University Athletics (OUA) titles, a U Sports bronze medal, and was named the OUA East coach of the year three times (1999, 2001, 2002). Assistant Coach: Tyrell Vernon Vernon is the head coach of TRC Academy (Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association) at The RISE Centre, and a former point guard for St. Francis Xavier University and McMaster University, where he was named to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) All-Rookie Team. TSN’s Kate Beirness hosts the network’s coverage of the game, live from the University of Toronto’s Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. As announced last month, TSN’s exclusive broadcast of the BIOSTEEL ALL CANADIAN BASKETBALL GAME features 24 of the top high school basketball players from across the country, including Virginia Tech commit Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Syracuse commit O’Shae Brissett, and Oregon commit Abu Kigab, and many more. A selection of players featured on the roster will also compete in the Nike Skills Challenge at the Athlete Institute in Orangeville, Ont., on Sunday, April 9. The event includes the Sport Chek 3-Point Shootout and BMO Slam Dunk Competition, as well as the Nike BioSteel Futures All Canadian Game, featuring top Canadian Grade 9 and 10 basketball players.
