BravoFACT Announces Award Recipients from August 28 Jury

– 13 Canadian filmmakers awarded more than half a million dollars for production of short films –

TORONTO (August 31, 2015) – Bell Media’s BravoFACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) announced today the 13 award recipients from the August 28 jury meeting. Selected from 182 applications, a total of $569,963 was awarded to Canadian filmmakers for the production of short films. As part of the BravoFACT Year Of The Female Filmmaker initiative, funding for nine out of the 13 projects was awarded to female-led projects. The jury was anchored by Canadian actor Natalie Brown. Since its inception in 1995, BravoFACT-supported films have enjoyed success both at home and abroad. Most recently, it was announced that two BravoFACT-funded shorts, Boxing and Boy have been selected to screen at The 2015 Toronto International Film Festival®. Additionally, recent BravoFACT-funded short The Deaths of Chet Baker has been adapted into a feature-length film, Born To Be Blue, starring Ethan Hawke and set to screen at TIFF next month.   The BravoFACT fund recipients from the August 28, 2015 jury meeting are: Five Short Films about Technology – Jon Keltz (Producer), Kyle Hollett (Producer), Peter Huang (Director/Writer)
  • An anthology short that takes a darkly comic look at the absurd realities of how modern technology affects our lives daily.
Bird – Judy Holm (Producer), Michael McNamara (Producer), Sarah Jackson (Producer), Molly Parker (Director/Writer)
  • Sam, a man in the depths of despair, finds his mother’s lost canary down the lane, and with it, unexpectedly, hope.
County Time – Evan Landry (Producer), Jonathan Bensimon (Director), Josh Peace (Writer)
  • For Donnie it’s just another night of heavy drinking, until a woman with a badge messes up his plans.
Currency – Jeff Pangman (Producer), Emma Higgins (Director/Writer), Martin Macphail (Writer)
  • With half a million online followers and $10 to her name, Robyn must choose between the instant gratification of social status and the reality of the world around her.
The Goodnight Kiss – Producer: Siobhan McCarthy (Producer), Sarah Kalil (Producer), Laura Adkin (Director/Writer)
  • Everything in life comes with an end date, including relationships. What if you knew how your relationship would end? Would you start it in the first place?
La Maisonette – Sorren Isler (Producer/Writer), Jack Carr (Director/Writer)
  • A charming, agoraphobic young woman living vicariously through her noisy neighbours is tested when she has to break through her fears to rescue those who have come to mean so much.
Love in the Age of Like –Theodore Bezaire (Producer/Director), Paul Dhillon (Writer)
  • A young professional woman tries to decide whether or not to break up with her boyfriend because he hasn’t “liked” any of her social media posts.
Magic Mushrooms – Michelle Woodward (Producer), Sean Wainsteim (Director/Writer)
  • After a teenaged boy and his crush magically switch bodies, they discover that attraction is more complicated than they thought.
A Man’s Story – Emmanuel Kabongo (Producer), Fernando Arrioja (Director), Motion (Writer)
  • A sparring match takes an ugly turn when jarring memories of a traumatic childhood force young painter Kam to face his father, and the disturbing notions of manhood that they have both inherited.
Paseo – Kevin Krikst (Producer), Sarah Gadon (Producer), Matthew Hannam (Director/Writer)
  • Tagging along on her boyfriend’s work trip, a young woman rebels against her perceived role. In an attempt to feel something new, she gets lost in a dark, dreamlike and dangerous Barcelona.
Poison in the Water – Leonardo Dell’Anno (Producer), Caroline Mangosing (Producer), Romeo Candido (Director/Writer), Matt Wells (Writer)
  • A recent widower joins his daughter on the search for a witch in the forest that he believes is a manifestation of her grief.

  • A real estate agent falls into a crisis after she discovers a killer niche market; possessed homes.
Tomorrow’s Shadows – Ashleigh Rains (Producer), Geordie Sabbagh (Producer/Director/Writer)
  • Where futures are known, and happiness is guaranteed by G.O.D., a mother is given a choice – her child or her perfect future.
  Providing funding for short films since its inception in 1995, BravoFACT awards grants over four cycles per year: two grant cycles per year for scripted shorts via BravoFACT, and two grant cycles for short documentary projects via BravoFACTUAL. The next submission deadline for BravoFACTUAL is September 25, 2015. The next submission deadline for BravoFACT is December 4, 2015.
