SASKATOON (December 31, 2024) – CTV News Saskatoon announced tonight during
CTV NEWS AT SIX that
Don Greer is the recipient of the
2024 Saskatoon Citizen of the Year Award.
“Don Greer has spent decades sharing his time and talents to enhance the community. Many in Saskatoon may know Don for his annual ice sculptures, which have been enjoyed by many since the early 1970s,” said J.C. Garden, Manager of Operations, Local TV & Radio and Director of News & Public Affairs Saskatchewan, Bell Media. “In addition to his familiar winter ice displays, Don has worked to advance many additional community initiatives, including supporting local youth in sports and scouting, the performing arts through Shakespeare at the Saskatchewan and Persephone Theatre, and the environment with the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council.”
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Greer is a graduate of Walter Murray Collegiate, the University of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic (previously SAIST). Greer worked as an architect with a career spanning 35 years, and his work included several city landmarks such as Bishop Mahoney High School and Saskatoon City Hospital. He was a Scout Leader and has served on many boards including the Persephone Theatre, the Saskatoon Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, and the United Way of Greater Saskatoon – where a record-breaking $2.27 million was raised during his time as the Annual Community Campaign Chair.
Honoured with numerous awards and recognitions, Greer has been the recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan, the Honourary Member for Outstanding Service Award from the Saskatoon POW City Kin-20 Club, and the Honorary Membership Award from the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.
The
Saskatoon Citizen of the Year Award presented by CTV is an annual tradition now in its 58
th year. Each November, CTV Saskatoon accepts nominations from viewers for the
Saskatoon Citizen of the Year Award and presents the award at the end of December to an individual who exemplifies excellence in community service.
