– CTV Saskatoon marks 50 years of recognizing community members who make a difference –
SASKATOON (December 31, 2016) – CTV Saskatoon today announced that David Arnot has been named the 2016 Saskatoon Citizen of the Year. Revealed today on CTV NEWS AT SIX by David Fisher, Vice-President and General Manager of CTV Saskatchewan, Arnot will receive the Award at a reception in early 2017.
“Throughout his life David has been a true champion of respect and belonging for all people in our city, province and country,” said Fisher. “He represents the best of our citizenry in his efforts to make our community more inclusive.”
Arnot’s career has been that of a tireless defender of the rights of all citizens. He has served as a Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, the Director General of the Aboriginal Justice, Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Justice, and as the Treaty Commissioner for the Province of Saskatchewan. Arnot is currently the Chief Commissioner for the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.
In one of the many letters of support for Arnot’s nomination, FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said: “With an unwavering vision for what is possible, he has brought together educators, legal and political leaders and the public to see the importance of harmony for our society.”
A key tenet throughout Arnot’s career has been the importance of education to realize a truly inclusive community. Most recently, he has been a driving force in the development and implementation of a contemporary citizenship education program designed to shape future citizens who are enlightened, empowered, empathic, ethical, and engaged.
Arnot’s efforts have been recognized by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, The Canadian Bar Association, and the Congregation Agudas Israel. He was named honourary Chief of the Onion Lake First Nation, and the United Nations recognized his work on teaching Treaties in the Classroom as a model for Canada.
The Saskatoon Citizen of the Year Award presented by CTV is an annual tradition now in its 50th year. Each November, CTV accepts nominations from viewers for the Saskatoon Citizen of the Year Award, and at the end of December, presents the award to an individual who exemplifies excellence in community service.
