CTV News Chief International Correspondent Paul Workman returns to Afghanistan for the first time since 2008 to report on the effects of the Taliban reclaiming control of the country after 20 years. CTV News delivers REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: PAUL WORKMAN IN AFGHANISTAN, airing Sunday, May 15 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV News Channel, the CTV News app, and CTVNews.ca. The special includes Workman’s personal reflections on being back in Afghanistan, a country with a long history of strife and now, in turmoil once again, with vulnerable Afghans most at risk, particularly women and children. After the September 11 attacks in 2001, Workman spent years covering Afghanistan, where 40,000+ members of the Canadian Armed Forces served, 158 Canadian soldiers died, and where Canadians continue to support humanitarian initiatives. Canada’s 12-year military mission in Afghanistan officially ended in March 2014. “I hope viewers will come away with a sense of just how desperate and dire life is in Afghanistan today,” said Workman. “Especially for girls and women who suffer the greatest abuse. The story I tell in this special, the despair I witnessed, is their story.” With a career in journalism spanning four decades and several continents, Workman has covered notable events and reported from some of the most dangerous conflict zones in the world, from the Middle East to Asia, Africa, and Europe. Marc D’Amours is Director of Photography. Angelo Altomare is Editor. Rosa Hwang is Executive Producer. Michael Melling is VP, CTV News. REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: PAUL WORKMAN IN AFGHANISTAN is a snapshot of the high-calibre journalism Workman consistently brings in his regular reports for CTV NATIONAL NEWS, airing nightly at 11 p.m. (check local listings) on CTV, CTV.ca, CTVNews.ca, and the CTV app.
