TORONTO (March 27, 2014) – DAILY PLANET – Canada’s favourite science program – rides shotgun with scientists who drive their cars into storms on “Forces of Nature” Week, premiering Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. ET on Discovery. Join co-hosts Ziya Tong and Dan Riskin as they examine the most destructive forces of nature on Planet Earth – from wildfires and volcanoes, dust and ice storms, to hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and a special look at this week’s tragic Washington State mudslides.

Highlights from DAILY PLANET’s “Forces of Nature” Week include:
Blacktip Shark Migration
Just off Miami and Fort Lauderdale beaches…sharks congregate by the thousands. And they hang out swimming-distance from the shorelines. Why the sharks mass there is a mystery, so a local shark expert Stephen Kajiura has taken it upon himself to find out. DAILY PLANET travels by plane and boat as Kajiura spots them from the air and catches them in the water to try and learn more about one of nature’s most ferocious predators.
Fire Tornado
How do deadly forest fires spread? Michael Gollner grew up with wildfires around his home and is now determined to find that answer and help save lives. DAILY PLANET joins Gollner in his lab for incredible experiments that surprised Discovery camera crews … and culminated in a fire tornado more than two meters tall!
Mr. Extreme House
In the Pacific Northwest, Mother Nature can show up unexpectedly and with tragic consequences – this week’s tragic Washington State mudslide is a classic example. When someone wants a home designed to withstand, or at least mitigate, the Northwest’s brutal forces of nature – the go-to guy is architect Dan Nelson. Nelson takes DAILY PLANET to his latest project – an ocean-side house located at the bottom of a steep embankment. It’s designed to stand on exposed metal beams allowing any mud or water run-off to flow under the main structure.
Tsunami Pod
Chris Robinson witnessed the deadly power of the ocean during the 2011 Japan tsunami – and was inspired to create the Tsunami Pod – with the hope of one day saving countless lives. Robinson has been building it for two years and is six months away from testing the massive vessel – it weighs nearly 1350 kilos. DAILY PLANET visits the workshop that this modern-day Noah has created in order to finish building the pod.
