(EPI), announced today that it has completed production on the third season of its hit international series HOW TECH WORKS (13×30). Hosted by British scientist Dr. Basil Singer (Discovery’s SPACE PIONEER), the series takes viewers around the world to meet the innovators behind the planet’s most cutting-edge science and technology. The first two seasons have proved massively successful for Discovery Science brands across EMEA (Europe/Middle East/Africa) and Asia-Pacific, and Season 3 it set to turn up the tech with incredible science stories from genius inventors in Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, and the United States.

Highlights from Season 3 of HOW TECH WORKS include:

A Real Life Transformer – The Kuratas Robot

It’s Earth’s biggest rideable robot! It’s called the Kuratas robot, the brainchild of Japan’s Kogoro Kurata, whose father always told him it was possible to build anything. So, he set out to build every child’s dream – a giant robot with articulated limbs that can walk down the street. Kuratas is controlled with an iPhone or a game interface. Standing nearly two-storeys tall, Kuratas would make quite a statement on anyone’s gift list – or home. And for just $1.3 million, it’s actually possible.

Mine Kafon

There are more than 100 million active landmines in the world and the Mine Kafon could help rid countries of hidden landmines for good – and save thousands of lives. Netherlands-based designer Massoud Hassani has created a lighter, cheaper alternative to traditional landmine sweepers. Resembling a dandelion, the Mine Kafon is a round, lightweight structure made of bamboo sticks with pressure pads attached, and its aerodynamic shape allows it to move by catching gusts of wind underneath.

Hail Testing

The world’s newest hail testing lab is throwing all it has… at a house! HOW TECH WORKS is on the scene to see what building materials work and those that don’t.

Touchy Camera

Two years ago, Hong Kong-based Eric Siu began to notice that much of the technology used daily tended to alienate people from one another. So, Siu designed a piece of technology that would do just the opposite – bring people together. He calls his invention ‘Touchy’. It’s a strange looking helmet that covers the wearer’s eyes, effectively making them blind.  When curious bystanders come in for a closer look, Siu’s handler hands them a small electric device, and tells them that for Siu to see, they have to touch him.  When they do, an electric circuit is completed, and the shutters over Sui’s eyes open wide. If they touch him for 10 seconds, a built in digital camera will even snap a photo, which will display on an LCD screen on the back of the helmet.

HOW TECH WORKS is executive produced by Karen McCairley for EPI and Adam Jacobs for Discovery Science.

International distribution for HOW TECH WORKS is being handled by Tony Leadman, Head of Worldwide Program Distribution, Exploration Distribution Inc. Interested parties should contact Mr. Leadman’s office directly at 416.384.4410 or tony.leadman@bellmedia.ca
