- The TSN and Crave Original documentary, BLACK ICE, from UNINTERRUPTED Canada, premieres Thursday, Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. ET. The full-length feature documentary examines the role of Black players in hockey and is directed by Oscar nominee Hubert Davis and produced by Vinay Virmani and Scott Moore. BLACK ICE is a sobering survey of systemic marginalization within one of the world’s most beloved team sports and features an incredible roster of hockey players offering their insight and testimony, women and men from both major and minor leagues, including Akim Aliu, Sarah Nurse, Saroya Tinker, Mark Connors, Wayne Simmonds, and P.K. Subban. Their stories are eye-opening and often painful, but their bravery in sharing their experiences, along with their faith in the fundamental beauty and excitement of hockey, infuse the documentary with a galvanizing sense of hope for a more inclusive future.
FEBRUARY 3 – ESCAPING THE TALIBAN: REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK BY GENEVIEVE BEAUCHEMIN
- In a one-hour CTV National News special, correspondent Genevieve Beauchemin follows the perilous journey of Afghan refugees who have managed to escape the Taliban, but are stranded in Pakistan, waiting for the help promised to them by the Canadian government. Since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, Canada pledged to take in 40,000 vulnerable Afghans by the end of 2023. To date, less than 30,000 have arrived in Canada. Among those in limbo for more than a year are Afghans who worked with Canadians to promote gender equality and human rights; mothers and children living in squalor in a tent city in the heart of Islamabad; and former Afghan translators who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan, at great personal risk.
