From Actress to Activist

E!
Rose McGowan shows we are all more than just a label

Brave? Hero? There are many ways to describe her, but artist and activist Rose McGowan is more than just a label. The well-known actress has risen to prominence as a key voice of the #MeToo movement, speaking out against sexual harassment and abuse in Hollywood. As her story has been heard, and others joined with their own experiences, the #MeToo movement has given women a voice and sparked discussions about important issues in Hollywood. As E!’s limited docu-series CITIZEN ROSE returns this Thursday, McGowan faces criticism, controversy, and unkind labels as she prepares to launch her New York Times best-selling think piece, Brave. Under intense media scrutiny, years of built up trauma start to surface and push her to a breaking point. E! recently released a powerful short film promoting the return of the series, tackling some of the labels thrust upon McGowan by asking ordinary passersby to watch a slideshow of questions about nameless people. Questions like: “What do you call someone who speaks up when no one else will?” “What would you call someone raised in a cult?” It’s easy to label someone, but we are all more than a label. E!’s limited series CITIZEN ROSE returns for a three-part special beginning Thursday, May 17 at 10 p.m. ET.
