By BILL HARRIS Special to The Lede It will be fascinating to watch how the 78TH GOLDEN GLOBE® AWARDS establish a “temporary identity,” according to Lainey Lui. “Typically, the GLOBES are the biggest party, they’re all in that ballroom together, drinking champagne, and part of the intrigue was to see who went table-hopping, and the live cutaways,” said Lainey, the acting co-anchor on CTV’s ETALK and co-host of THE SOCIAL. But this year’s GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, which air live Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on CTV, are being held virtually, due to the pandemic, with co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler performing their duties from opposite coasts. “I feel like they’ll find a way to create that unpredictability and spontaneity somehow – that’s what’s going to be so much fun,” Lainey said. “But a lot of that responsibility is going to rest on Tina and Amy.” As for the awards themselves, here’s how Lainey breaks down the major categories: Film Best Motion Picture, Drama: The Father; Mank; Nomadland; Promising Young Woman; The Trial of the Chicago 7 LAINEY: “I think it’s going to be The Trial of the Chicago 7. The word on the street is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves this movie. It’s the kind of movie that they are super into. As we’ve established, they’re a very eclectic bunch, right? And this movie lines up very well with their ‘Globe-ness.’ They also love Sacha Baron Cohen.” Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama: Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday; Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman; Frances McDormand, Nomadland; Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman LAINEY: “I think they’re going to go with Viola Davis – as they should.” Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama: Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Riz Ahmed, The Sound of Metal; Anthony Hopkins, The Father; Gary Oldman, Mank; Tahar Rahim, The Mauritanian LAINEY: “I think they’ll go with Riz Ahmed.” Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm; Hamilton; Music; Palm Springs; The Prom LAINEY:Borat. As I said, they love Sacha Baron Cohen. Of course, the big scandal in this category is why music is there. It’s absurd.” Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm; Kate Hudson, Music; Michelle Pfeiffer, French Exit; Rosamund Pike, I Care A Lot; Anya Taylor-Joy, Emma LAINEY: “I have to go with Maria Bakalova here, keeping with the good night for Borat. And she really carried that movie. I mean, I would have no objection, she was amazing.” Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm; James Corden, The Prom; Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton; Dev Patel, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Andy Samberg, Palm Springs LAINEY: “Having just said that Maria Bakalova carried the movie, let me give this some more thought. The thing is, I don’t think anyone else is challenging Sacha Baron Cohen here. That’s the problem. So I think Sacha takes it for this category.” Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture: Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy; Olivia Colman, The Father; Jodie Foster, The Mauritanian; Amanda Seyfried, Mank; Helena Zengel, News of the World LAINEY: “Here’s the thing, they (members of the HFPA) love Olivia Colman, but I’m wondering if they’re going to give this one to Amanda Seyfried. Okay, I’ll stay with Olivia Colman, but Amanda Seyfried is a dark horse.” Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture: Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial of the Chicago 7; Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah; Jared Leto, The Little Things; Bill Murray, On the Rocks; Leslie Odom, Jr., One Night in Miami LAINEY: “I think it’s going to be Sacha Baron Cohen again, and the reason why is, the GLOBES did not nominate Chadwick Boseman in this category (for Da 5 Bloods). So again, I just don’t see who’s going to go head-to-head with Sacha.” Television Best Television Series, Drama: THE CROWN; LOVECRAFT COUNTRY; THE MANDALORIAN; OZARK; RATCHED LAINEY: “THE CROWN. No. 1, I think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves THE CROWN, but I also think this particular season – not that THE CROWN ever went anywhere – but it was quite a comeback. This was the Diana season. Everyone watched.” Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama: Olivia Colman, THE CROWN; Jodie Comer, KILLING EVE; Emma Corrin, THE CROWN; Laura Linney, OZARK; Sarah Paulson, RATCHED LAINEY: “I just wonder if those two actresses on THE CROWN could cancel each other out, so I’m going to take Laura Linney here. Because that way, they won’t have to choose between the Queen and Diana. But Emma Corrin could be a dark horse.” Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama: Jason Bateman, OZARK; Josh O’Connor, THE CROWN; Bob Odenkirk, BETTER CALL SAUL; Al Pacino, HUNTERS; Matthew Rhys, PERRY MASON LAINEY: “I say Jason Bateman here.” Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy: EMILY IN PARIS; THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT; SCHITT’S CREEK; THE GREAT; TED LASSO LAINEY: “Okay, so here’s where I think I might be predicting an upset. SCHITT’S CREEK  swept all those EMMY® AWARDS, but it has never been acknowledged by the GLOBES. So all these nominations are the GLOBES’ way of making it up to SCHITT’S CREEK. But the GLOBES love rewarding new things. Plus, there’s a significant membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that is U.K.-based. So I think it’s going to be TED LASSO. The GLOBES love differentiating themselves from the EMMYS, and I think this is one of the ways they’re going to do it.” Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy: Lily Collins, EMILY IN PARIS; Kaley Cuoco, THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT; Elle Fanning, THE GREAT; Jane Levy, ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST; Catherine O’Hara, SCHITT’S CREEK LAINEY: “Here’s where I think it’s Catherine O’Hara.” Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy: Don Cheadle, BLACK MONDAY; Nicholas Hoult, THE GREAT; Eugene Levy, SCHITT’S CREEK; Jason Sudekis, TED LASSO; Ramy Youssef, RAMY LAINEY: “Eugene Levy … no wait, I’m going to change that. Jason Sudekis.” Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television: NORMAL PEOPLE; THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT; SMALL AXE; THE UNDOING; UNORTHODOX LAINEY: “I think it’s THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT here.” Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television: Cate Blanchett, MRS. AMERICA; Daisy Edgar-Jones, NORMAL PEOPLE; Shira Haas, UNORTHODOX; Nicole Kidman, THE UNDOING; Anya Taylor-Joy, THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT LAINEY: “Anya Taylor-Joy.” Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television: Bryan Cranston, YOUR HONOR; Jeff Daniels, THE COMEY RULE; Hugh Grant, THE UNDOING; Mark Ruffalo, I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE; Ethan Hawke, THE GOOD LORD BIRD LAINEY: “I’m going to go with Hugh Grant here.” Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Television Series: Gillian Anderson, THE CROWN; Helena Bonham Carter, THE CROWN; Julia Garner, OZARK; Annie Murphy, SCHITT’S CREEK; Cynthia Nixon, RATCHED LAINEY: “Gillian Anderson.” Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Television Series: John Boyega, SMALL AXE; Brendan Gleeson, THE COMEY RULE; Daniel Levy, SCHITT’S CREEK; Jim Parsons, HOLLYWOOD; Donald Sutherland, THE UNDOING LAINEY: “Dan Levy.” billharristv@gmail.com @billharris_tv
