BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: IN HIS OWN WORDS features the rock icon as he discusses key moments that provided the influence for some of the most acclaimed songs of his extensive career, and the impact that 1950s Doo-Wop, Elvis’s Rockabilly rebellion, and soul music had on his life. In intimate conversation, Springsteen explores his early years growing up in Freehold, New Jersey, recounting the seminal moments that fueled his relentless drive to become a musician, his years as a bar band king in Asbury Park, the rise of the E Street Band, and his eventual ascendance to the top of rock’s hierarchy.
The documentary also features rare and previously unseen archive footage of Springsteen at various stages in his life, provided in consultation with film director and archivist Thom Zimny. Zimny has spent 16 years cataloguing photographs, film, and audio recordings of Springsteen throughout his career.
The documentary was filmed in fall 2016 in the U.S. and Britain, while Springsteen was launching his
New York Times bestselling autobiography
Born to Run. Hailed as the global publishing event of the year, the book stayed on the bestseller list for 15 straight weeks, and received critical raves around the world. It will be published in paperback on September 5, 2017.
The companion album,
Chapter And Verse, coincided with the book’s release. Springsteen selected the songs on
Chapter And Verse to reflect the themes and sections of
Born to Run. The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with “Wrecking Ball,” the title track from his 2012 album. The song collection traces Springsteen’s musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: IN HIS OWN WORDS is produced by Lonesome Pine Productions in collaboration with Thom Zimny. Director is Nigel Cole. Distributor is BBC Worldwide.
