Here’s what the critics are saying about TRUE DETECTIVE:
“Is this the series to reinvent the police procedural? Please, let it be so.” – Scott Stinson, The National Post
“TRUE DETECTIVE: McConaughey and Harrelson are the marquee names, but the show’s the star.” – John Doyle, The Globe and Mail
“If you think Matthew McConaughey rightly earned his Golden Globe nomination for his eye-popping physical acting in Dallas Buyers Club, then you won’t be surprised if he earns Emmy Awards clamour for his equally powerful and physical performance in TRUE DETECTIVE.” – Ashley Jude, The Toronto Star
“The early buzz puts both actors in contention for Emmy Awards for their uncompromising performances.” – Bill Brioux, The Canadian Press
“Matthew McConaughey has been on an undeniable roll, acting-wise, and continues the run with his misanthropic yet magnetic turn in the dark crime drama TRUE DETECTIVE.” – Jessica Wong, CBC News
“In their respective dual roles, McConaughey and Harrelson are galvanizing.” – Frazier Moore, The Associated Press
“TRUE DETECTIVE has three immediately impressive attributes. The acting — by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson — is off the charts. The writing, by series creator and novelist Nic Pizzolatto, undulates from effectively brash soliloquies to penetratingly nuanced moments carried by sparse prose. Lastly, director Cary Fukunaga has created a beautiful, sprawling sense of place (the series is shot and set in Louisiana).” – Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter
“If its second incarnation gives actors and actresses of this caliber as much good material as McConaughey and Harrelson got here, this HBO series will remain, as it is now, essential viewing.” – Maureen Ryan, Huffington Post
“TRUE DETECTIVE is good, it’s breathtaking, and watching half of its eight-episode first season was enough to commit me to stick with the rest.” James Poniewozik, TIME Magazine
TRUE DETECTIVE is an eight-episode, one-hour anthology series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a killer. Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) worked the macabre 1995 murder of a prostitute by a possible serial killer with disturbing occult leanings. In 2012, for reasons not immediately revealed, the two are interviewed separately by investigators about this notorious case. As they look back on the case, Hart and Cohle’s personal backstories and often-strained relationship become a major focal point. Hart, an outgoing native Louisianan and family man whose marriage is being frayed by work stress and infidelity, is (at least on the surface) the polar opposite of Cohle, a lone-wolf pessimist and former narcotics detective from Texas. While the plot moves forward by their shared obsession to hunt down the ritual killer, the true drama centres around the mercurial nature of Hart and Cohle’s relationship and personalities, and how they affect each other as detectives, friends, and men. Michelle Monaghan (Source Code) also stars as Hart’s wife who struggles to keep her family together as the men in her life become locked in a cycle of violence and obsession.
Immediately following the premiere of TRUE DETECTIVE, the highly anticipated Golden Globe® Award-winning comedy series GIRLS returns at 10 p.m. ET/MT, featuring a special presentation of two back-to-back episodes. In advance of the premiere, subscribers can catch up on Season 2 of in via on-demand platforms.
In Season 3 of the Golden Globe Award-winning comedy series GIRLS, Hannah (Lena Dunham) is now in a committed relationship with Adam (Adam Driver, Lincoln), and the two are settling into a newfound domesticity in Hannah’s apartment. Hannah is also working on rehabilitating her writing career and concentrating on delivering her eBook to her eccentric publisher. Meanwhile, Marnie (Allison Williams) is adjusting to life after a sudden and traumatic breakup with Charlie and meticulously working to achieve the life she feels she deserves. Nearing graduation, newly single Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) masterminds a plan to create a healthy balance between partying and her studies. And, continuing her streak of disrupting the lives of those around her, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) resurfaces and strikes up an ambiguous friendship with a flamboyant father figure. Over this season’s 12 episodes, the friendships between the girls are more volatile than ever, proving that female friendships have their own kind of romance.
