HBO’s WATCHMEN Tops with 26 Nominations for the 72nd PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS, Airing Sept. 20 on CTV

By BILL HARRIS Special to The Lede Emmy voters watched WATCHMEN and their verdict was clear: The HBO limited series led all shows with 26 nominations as the nominees for the 72^nd ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS were announced on Tuesday. It was also a spectacular day for HBO’s SUCCESSION (18 nominations), and WESTWORLD (11 nominations). Crave’s RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE, and CTV Drama Channel’s THE HANDMAID’S TALE were also in double-digits, with 10 nominations apiece. In total, the nomination bell rang an incredible 200 times for Bell Media programming. Among those receiving individual lead-acting nods: Regina King and Jeremy Irons for WATCHMEN; Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong for SUCCESSION; Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer for CTV Drama Channel’s KILLING EVE; Sterling K. Brown for CTV’s THIS IS US; Issa Rae for HBO’s INSECURE; Zendaya for HBO’s EUPHORIA; Hugh Jackman for HBO’s BAD EDUCATION; Mark Ruffalo for HBO’s I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE; Don Cheadle for SHOWTIME’s BLACK MONDAY; and Ramy Youssef for Crave’s RAMY. Notably, SUCCESSION racked up four more nominations for supporting acting (Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, Matthew McFadyen), while WATCHMEN got three more (Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Jovan Adepo, Louis Gossett Jr.). The variety talk series category produced nominations for CTV Comedy Channel’s THE DAILY SHOW WITH TREVOR NOAH, and FULL FRONTAL WITH SAMANTHA BEE, as well as HBO’s LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER. RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE is joined by CTV’s THE MASKED SINGER, and THE VOICE for outstanding competition series. The 72^nd PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS will be held Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. ET, live on CTV.
