OTTAWA – His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,Governor General of Canada, is pleased to invite members of the public to joinhim for the first-ever Rideau Hall Movie Nights, onAugust 17 and 19, 2014, in Ottawa. Featuring outdoor screeningsof acclaimed Canadian films on the grounds of the official residence of thegovernor general of Canada, this special event’s complete programming promisesto entertain the whole family.
“Thanks to a dynamic partnership with the Canadian film industry, thisone-of-a-kind summer gathering is set to celebrate Canada’s cultural vitalityand talent,” said the Governor General. “I am particularly looking forward toconnecting with thousands of fellow moviegoers on the grounds of Rideau Hall,and to enjoying great Canadian films up on the big screen.”
On August 17, the public is invited to come and enjoy anEnglish screening of The Grand Seduction, at9 p.m. At 8:40 p.m., director DonMcKellar will be on hand to talk about his filmmaking process and howthe film’s story was taken to Newfoundland and Labrador.
On August 19, Louis Cyr: l’homme le plus fort dumonde will be screened in French at 9 p.m. At8:40 p.m., an on-stage conversation with producerChristian Larouche, director Daniel Roby, andactor Gilbert Sicotte, will provide us with insight into howthey brought the life and battles of Louis Cyr to the big screen in thisaward-winning film.
And in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the National Film Board ofCanada, a selection of short films will be shown on bothnights, prior to the screenings of the feature films.
Members of the public can bring their blankets and a picnic and settle in towatch these films under the stars. Free popcorn will be available on-site on afirst-come, first-served basis. All activities are free of charge.
About Rideau Hall Movie Nights
Hosted by the Governor General, Rideau Hall Movie Nightswill feature acclaimed English and French Canadian films, screened on alternatenights, on the grounds of Rideau Hall. Rain dates are scheduled for August 18(English screening) and August 20 (French screening).
This event is made possible through Canadian film industry and media partnersincluding Cineplex Entertainment, Bell Media, Entertainment One (eOne), AirCanada, the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA), Telefilm Canada, theCanada Media Fund, Deluxe, the Canadian Film Institute (CFI), the Associationquébécoise de la production médiatique (AQPM), and Eye on Canada.
