(September 26, 2024) – CTV News’ W5 returns in a new format as the Investigative Unit of CTV NATIONAL NEWS, continuing W5’s decades-long commitment to covering tough, relevant stories. The new W5 Investigative Unit is led by Managing Editor and Senior Correspondent Avery Haines, Investigative Correspondent Jon Woodward, and TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead, with contributions from CTV NATIONAL NEWS reporters. The W5 Investigative Unit delivers its first investigation, “Narco Jungle: The Death Train”, a five-part series beginning Monday, Sept. 30 and airing throughout the week on CTV NATIONAL NEWS at 11 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, and on CTVNews.ca and the CTV News app. Following up on the acclaimed documentary, “Narco Jungle”, throughout the week Haines focuses on the plight of migrants searching for their Canadian and American dream. She boards Mexico’s notorious Death Train, travels the length of the U.S. / Mexico border, and interviews human smugglers who are cashing in on the migrant crisis. As well, on October 5, CTV launches W5: AVERY HAINES INVESTIGATES, a series of one-hour docs featuring Haines’ reporting from Canada and around the world. The first installment follows Haines as she travels through Central America and Mexico, tracking down families she met while trekking the most dangerous migrant route in the world: The Darien Gap. W5: AVERY HAINES INVESTIGATES airs Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, CTV.ca, and the CTV and CTV News apps, at 10 p.m. ET on CTV2, and streams the next day on Crave. “As the W5 Investigative Unit launches within CTV NATIONAL NEWS, we’re proud to deliver the same journalistic excellence and powerful, first-person stories that Canadians have come to expect from W5,” said Haines. “In ‘Narco Jungle: The Death Train’, we speak with families who thought the Darien Gap would be the worst part of their journey towards the U.S. border. They couldn’t have been more wrong. All three families we followed have harrowing stories of what this journey has cost them.” W5 segments are also available on demand on CTVNews.ca, and through the CTV and CTV News apps. The flagship edition of CTV NATIONAL NEWS, led by Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Omar Sachedina, continues to wrap up the biggest news of the day at 11 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, CTVNews.ca, and the CTV and CTV News apps.
