- THE GOOD LORD BIRD, SHOWTIME’s seven-part limited series starring Ethan Hawke (Dead Poets Society), Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), and Joshua Caleb Johnson (BLACK-ISH), premieres Sunday, October 4. This humourous, dramatic, and historical tapestry of Antebellum America is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by author James McBride. The series is told from the point of view of “Onion” (Johnson), a newly freed teenager who joins abolitionist John Brown (Hawke) on a holy crusade to end slavery and finds himself part of the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. The limited series is an adventure that’s equal parts absurd and tragic, spotlighting the ever-changing racial, religious, and gender roles that make up American identity. The series follows a weekly rollout schedule with new episodes dropping Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
- SHOWTIME’s five-part documentary series chronicling the evolution of comedy, THE COMEDY STORE, premieres Sunday, October 4 at 10 p.m. ET. The series brings to life the legends, heartbreak, and history created at The Comedy Store, which over the past 47 years has launched the careers of a breathtaking array of stars. THE COMEDY STORE is directed and executive produced by Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger, Reign Over Me), who started at the Store as a doorman before rising to main-stage performer, and executive produced by Oscar®-nominee and Emmy winner Mike Tollin (The Last Dance). The series follows a weekly rollout schedule with new episodes dropping on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
What Critics Are Saying about SHOWTIME’s THE COMEY RULE
Some of the biggest names in Hollywood are loving SHOWTIME’s
THE COMEY RULE! Barbara Streisand describes it as “
so good,” Judd Apatow calls it “
a must see”, Shonda Rhimes says “
do not miss it,” and Ellen Barkin
tells her followers “Brendan Gleeson’s performance in #TheComeyRule will plague Trump more than the reveal of his tax returns.”
“
Unmissable history-on-the run TV”
“[…] the two-parter isn’t always subtle, but it has wit, and although you know much of the story, it grips. […] as Trump, Brendan Gleeson is devilishly good. He gets the voice and tone correct. The Trump he plays is an empty person, a ceaseless dealer in transactional games he thinks are immensely clever.”
