OCTOBER 5 – HBO Max’s SMARTLESS: ON THE ROAD *Docuseries*
- Hop on the road with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes as they give audiences an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at their sold-out live tour of their wildly successful podcast, “SmartLess.” Traveling across the U.S., the six-part docuseries provides a sneak peek into the minds, conversations, and bonds behind one of the country’s most popular podcasts. On the show, the trio is joined by celebrities such as Conan O’Brien, Will Ferrell, Matt Damon, Jimmy Kimmel, Kevin Hart, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, David Letterman, and more. All episodes of SMARTLESS: ON THE ROAD drop Thursday, Oct. 5.
- HBO Max’s Original comedy series OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH, from creator-showrunner David Jenkins, Emmy-nominated executive producer and star Taika Waititi, and Emmy-nominated executive producer Garrett Basch, returns with three episodes on Thursday, Oct. 5. OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH is based, (very) loosely, on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas… they found love. Now, they have to survive it. Season 2 continues with two, new episodes dropping every Thursday.
- Based on 3Peat Comedy’s acclaimed sketch of the same name, director Tim Story’s savvy and vicious skewering of genre film tropes poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first? THE BLACKENING centres around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway, only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this isn’t a game. THE BLACKENING drops Friday, Oct. 6 on STARZ.
- Hosted by award-winning actress Karine Vanasse (CTV’s CARDINAL), THE TRAITORS CANADA is a new original unscripted competition series based on lies, deceits, distrust, and treachery. Living in a historic manor in Montréal are 20 of Canada’s most cunning contestants, a mix of famous faces, and everyday Canadians, who compete in the ultimate murder mystery game for a chance to win up to $100,000. The catch? Hidden amongst the Faithful contestants are Traitors that gather every night to eliminate one of their fellow guests in the hopes of keeping the prize for themselves. The Faithfuls must try to unmask the Traitors, by banishing someone daily from the game at the Round Table, before time runs out. THE TRAITORS CANADA airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV, CTV.ca, and the CTV app, while episodes are available on Cravethe following Saturday.
- Nestled deep in the Australian Outback is the remote town of Larrimah and its 11 eccentric residents. When Paddy Moriarty and his dog Kellie left the local pub and vanished in December of 2017, a long history of infighting is unveiled as the remaining residents become suspects in an unfolding investigation that leads to Paddy being declared dead. The documentary, told in five chapters, shines a light on Larrimah’s quirky history and how the town’s once close-knit and jubilant residents brought about their own fate. The HBO Original documentary premieres Sunday, Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. ET.
- In the aftermath of the deadly Charlottesville, Virginia “Unite the Right” white nationalist rally in 2017, attorneys Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan and Karen Dunn filed a civil lawsuit against 17 white nationalist leaders and organizations on behalf of nine plaintiffs who suffered physical and emotional injuries, while peacefully counter protesting the rally. The lawsuit alleged that the event was not an isolated, spontaneous gathering, but rather a well-planned and coordinated conspiracy to incite racially motivated violence, and to advance an anti-Semitic, race-war agenda. And the courtroom drama that ensued put those ideas to the test. The HBO Original documentary streams Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. ET.
