TORONTO (December 9, 2013) – The ambitious fortune seekers of Nome, Alaska, are back at it again – but this time, they’re working at a fevered pitch in freezing temperatures. Premiering Monday, January 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery, BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE follows an intrepid group of Alaskan miners working the off-season. It is winter and nothing will stop them from searching for gold – even if it’s located at the bottom of the Bering Sea beneath thick sheets of ice more than a metre thick. This year, the conditions are even more brutal and the challenges greater than ever before. With temperatures dropping below -35 C, crews face the real threat of hypothermia, frostbite and even death, as the gold hungry crews dive deep under the ice putting everything on the line with the hope of hitting the ultimate mother lode.

Warmed by the promise of gold, Discovery presents BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE, premiering January 6.

During BERING SEA GOLD, viewers were introduced to a team of dredgers searching for gold in the waters of the Bering Sea just off the Alaskan coast, during the summer when the ice had melted. Now, this frozen five-part companion series, BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE, follows four teams of men and women diving under the ice of the Bering Sea in their quest for fortune. Only the very toughest miners have what it takes to dredge for gold during an arctic winter.

The winter season for dredging the Bering Sea’s gold begins when the storms calm and the ice is thick enough to support the miner’s dredging equipment. This new series follows the unique process of diving under the ice to mine Nome’s gold before the summer gold rush arrives. Highlights from the first episodes include:

BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE – “We Are Gonna Be Golden”

Mon., Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

The crews move out onto the ice. Zeke’s new crew is on the gold. They shut out late-arrival Emily, so she joins her dad Steve’s team. Nome’s angriest dredger, Scott, returns with a new dredge and attitude to match – but will it last?

BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE – “Dozers and Dragons”

Mon., Jan. 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

Zeke takes a gamble on a new dredger with game-changing technology – but a huge ego. Emily chafes under her dad’s laidback management style and challenges his authority. She also tangles with Shawn, trying to buy a key piece of equipment out from under him.

BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE – “No Fuel, No Burn”

Mon., Jan. 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

It’s midseason, and patience is thin: Scott’s dredge is literally running on fumes; cocky newcomer Glen clashes with Zeke over how to best run the dredge; and Emily’s fed up with how her dad is running their operation.

Season 3 of the original BERING SEA GOLD – the summer season – returns Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, beginning February 17.
