At a star-studded screening event in Toronto on April 11, Crave and TIFF presented the Canadian premiere of HBO’s new limited series, THE SYMPATHIZER. The screening was attended by executive producer and co-showrunner Don McKellar, executive producer Niv Fichman, and cast members Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Duy Nguyen, and Kieu Chinh. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow made a special appearance, while TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey moderated a Q&A with producers and cast. Other guests in attendance included David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, and the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada. Starring Emmy® winner Sandra Oh and Academy Award® winner Robert Downey Jr., THE SYMPATHIZER is a seven part, limited drama series based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. The espionage thriller and cross-culture satire follows the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War, and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over. THE SYMPATHIZER premieres on Crave on Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. ET, and is a co-production between HBO, A24, and Canada’s Rhombus Media, produced in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
