Crave continues to deliver weekly alerts highlighting new and noteworthy programming and scheduling changes for the week ahead.
Highlights This Week
- The new HBO Max Original Film, UNPREGNANT premieres Monday, September 10. Adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by authors Jenni Hendriksand Ted Caplan, the story follows 17-year-old Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) who never thought she’d want to fail a test – that is, until she finds herself staring at a piece of plastic with a blue plus. With a promising college-bound future now disappearing before her eyes, Veronica considers a decision she never imagined she’d have to make. This never-taken-lightly decision leads her on a 1000-mile hilarious road trip to New Mexico over three days with her ex-best friend, Bailey (Barbie Ferreira, EUPHORIA), where they discover sometimes the most important choice you’ll make in life is who your friends are.
- The powerful and thought-provoking film, JUST MERCY, based on the true story of Bryan Stevenson, premieres Saturday, September 12. An official selection at TIFF 2019, the film follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Brie Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx,) who was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl. Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them.
- HBO’s new socially distanced comedy, COASTAL ELITES debuts Saturday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET. From playwright and screenwriter Paul Rudnick (Addams Family Values) and directed by Jay Roach (Bombshell), this comedic satire tells contemporary stories of characters breaking down and breaking through as they grapple with politics, culture, and the pandemic. Bette Midler (Hello, Dolly!), Kaitlyn Dever (UNBELIEVABLE, Booksmart), Dan Levy (SCHITT’S CREEK), Sarah Paulson (AMERICAN CRIME STORY), and Issa Rae (INSECURE) star in this special presentation that explores our current world of deeply divided politics and the universal pursuit of human connection.
- HBO’s new limited series, THE THIRD DAY, an official selection at TIFF 2020, premieres Monday, September 14 at 9 p.m. ET. Starring Jude Law (THE NEW POPE) and Naomie Harris (Skyfall), the series is divided into two parts: “Summer” and “Winter.” In “Summer,” one man (Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, “Winter,” a strong-willed outsider (Harris) comes to the island seeking answers, but instead causes a battle to decide its fate.
- HBO’s new coming-of-age drama, WE ARE WHO WE ARE premieres Monday, September 14 at 10 p.m. ET. Set in 2016, the eight-episode series follows the lives of two American teenagers living on a military base with their parents in Italy. The series explores typical teenage drama themes including friendship, love, and overall confusion in this little slice of America in Italy. Directed by Oscar®-nominee Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name), the cast includes Chloë Sevigny (THE ACT, BLOODLINE), Jack Dylan Grazer (It, It Chapter Two), Alice Braga (Lower City), Jordan Kristine Seamón, Spence Moore II (THE ROOKIE), Kid Cudi (90210), Faith Alabi (VERA), Francesca Scorsese (The Departed), Ben Taylor (Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace), Corey Knight (NOBODIES), Tom Mercier (Synonyms), and Sebastiano Pigazzi (Stupid Cupid).
What Critics Are Saying about the HBO Max Original Series RAISED BY WOLVES
“Okay, I’ll just say it: RAISED BY WOLVES is hands down the most thrilling original sci-fi show in more than a decade. Not since the Battlestar: Galactica reboot have I been more instantly hooked by a genre show or flummoxed by its twists and turns”
– Meghan O’Keefe, Decider
“It is a show that pulls you in with its eccentricity, holds you captive with unpredictability, but leaves you unsure of your own thoughts. […] What I do know is that I can’t wait to watch more. […] It’s an unpredictable, unusual, and unrelenting watch that’s created its own odd space in science-fiction television.”
– Tim Surette, TV Guide
