Part 1 looks at Breakaway’s nerve-racking first voyage and Part 2 – in a MIGHTY SHIPS first – goes behind-the-scenes to Germany to follow the months-long construction of Breakaway.
PROGRAM NOTE: Season 7 continues Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT beginning Nov. 15 with four additional all-new episodes, and concludes Dec. 13 with a best-of special/clip show.
beginning Nov. 15 with the fabulous Wind Surf (R)
In the first-part of an epic two-hour season premiere, MIGHTY SHIPS sets sail with Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship – the largest and most innovative ship to ever homeport in New York City. On her very first voyage, Breakaway’s Captain faces a tough decision as a north Atlantic tempest forms with winds up to 55 knots: face the storm head on, or divert around it and push his brand-new, untested engines to the max.
For the first time in MIGHTY SHIPS history, Discovery crews venture inside a shipyard to follow the construction of the world’s newest mega-cruiser from keel-laying to sea trials. In the second-part of the Season 7 premiere, viewers go behind-the-scenes at Germany’s Meyer-Werft shipyard. Meyer-Werft has been building ships since 1795, but they’ve never built anything as big as Norwegian Breakaway. What’s more, they have only 18 months to do it. It’s a tall order, even with Meyer-Werft’s specialized laser welding system and the largest shipbuilding hall in the world.
Imagine a sleek, five-masted luxury sailing yacht with tall billowing sails on brilliant blue seas – a graceful sailing ship that’s large enough to pamper and yet small enough to tuck into tiny harbours and hidden coves where no one else can go. Wind Surf offers adventure at sea and on land. In harbour, she opens her water activity deck so her guests can sailboard, kayak, swim or waterski. On shore, her guests trek into the Croatian wilderness and go whitewater rafting. In one of the highlights of Season 7, MIGHTY SHIPS spotlights the extraordinary efforts displayed by Captain and crew to deliver the cruise of a lifetime.
MIGHTY SHIPS is produced by Exploration Production Inc. (EPI) in association with Discovery Canada. Gemini-nominee Karen McCairley (ALIEN MYSTERIES, SEX FILES) is the Executive Producer. Series Producer is Richard Martyn.
