TORONTO (November 15, 2013) – Viewers can discover what it really means to be a penguin as the latest spy cameras offer a whole new perspective on the behaviour and extreme survival tactics of these incredible and hugely charismatic birds. A BBC/Discovery co-production, the two-hour special PENGUINS: WADDLE ALL THE WAY premieres Sunday, December 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Fascinating and fully immersive, filmmaking technology moves to the next level with “penguin-cams,” a range of high-tech, hyper-realistic animatronic cameras disguised as penguins, chicks, and eggs. With these spies in the huddle, PENGUINS: WADDLE ALL THE WAY follows a year of penguin drama, challenge – and even comedy!

The two-hour special PENGUINS: WADDLE ALL THE WAY premieres Dec. 15 on Discovery

The special is narrated by Emmy-award winning actress Jane Lynch, best known for her role as one-liner powerhouse coach Sue Sylvester on GLEE. “I’ve been a big fan of Discovery’s wildlife programming for years, and I am truly thrilled to be narrating PENGUINS: WADDLE ALL THE WAY. It’s hard to go wrong with a title like that. And seriously, is there anything cuter than a penguin?” said Lynch.

PENGUINS: WADDLE ALL THE WAY offers viewers an unprecedented glimpse into the lives and challenges of three different penguin species: Emperor penguins in Antarctica, Rockhopper penguins on the Falkland Islands, and Humboldt penguins in the Atacama Desert of Peru. These feisty and charismatic birds struggle to raise their young against extraordinary odds. The amazing technical wizardry of the penguin-cams allows the devices to blend undetected into these three unique penguin colonies – both on land and at sea – allowing a closer view of the creatures than ever before.

Using animatronic cameras cleverly disguised as life-size penguins, the filmmakers could infiltrate the protective colonies from an entirely new angle, recording the emotional and oftentimes amusing behaviours of the penguins. More than 50 remote controlled cameras camouflaged as super-realistic penguins, chicks, and even eggs, allowed the the team an unparalleled opportunity to waddle with these flightless birds without ruffling any feathers. A technological first, one of the types of spy cameras is a robotic penguin with cameras for eyes. These penguin-cams can swim, toboggan, waddle, jump – and even lay fake eggs! The cameras’ disguise leads to some surprising encounters – one penguin even falls in love with a Rockhopper-cam!
