TORONTO (February 20, 2014) – Enbridge’s application to increase the volume of oil and reverse the flow of Line 9 to carry Alberta crude, including oil sands bitumen, to Québec has raised questions of safety and divided the country in fierce debate. In W5’s “PIPELINE WAR,” premiering this Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO, Tom Kennedy investigates the Canadian energy company’s proposed plan and speaks with representatives from Enbridge, environmental safety experts, and landowners who would be affected. Then in a “SOLDIER’S JOURNEY,” Kennedy follows the incredible journey of a Canadian turned British solider who became the leading man in a remarkable  play featuring real-life soldiers recovering from severe injuries.

Enbridge’s reputation has been under scrutiny since the 2010 oil spill in Michigan’s Kalamazoo River, the worst inland oil spill in North American history. Now, with the company seeking to reverse the flow of a 38-year-old pipeline that stretches from Sarnia to Montréal, there are serious questions about whether the line can withstand the proposed modifications. One expert interviewed by W5 believes the line may rupture within the first five years of its reversal. Running through some of the most populous areas of the country, there are concerns about the impact a leak might have. For its part, Enbridge is quick to defend its practices and proposal. As the debate edges closer to an end, both sides are fighting bitterly to make sure their interests are protected.

In the second story of the evening, W5 speaks with Newfoundland’s Cassidy Little, an ex-solider and the lead in the British production The Two Worlds of Charlie F. Little describes how he joined the British Army on a dare and served in Afghanistan, losing a leg in the explosion of an improvised explosive device. W5’s “SOLDIER’S JOURNEY” offers viewers a front row seat to the play that follows the lives of soldiers injured in war, slated for its Toronto debut next week. What makes this play so striking is that half the cast – including Little himself – are real-life soldiers recovering from lost limbs, lost friends, and the trauma of war. Kennedy recounts Little’s near unbelievable journey from bartending on George Street in St. John’s, to fighting in a savage conflict, to starring in the footlights.

W5 also airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV Two, and can be seen on Investigation Discovery on Tuesdays at 11 p.m. ET, and Wednesdays 12 noon ET; on demand at CTVNews.ca/W5; the CTV GO App, the CTV Mobile channel on Bell Mobile TV, and through video on demand partners, such as Bell Fibe TV (visit CTV.ca for local listings). W5 is also simulcast in Toronto on CFRB NEWSTALK1010.
