The documentary chronicles the inspiring life story of Canadian sports icon Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser and her rise to prominence as one of this country’s most accomplished ice hockey players and national figures

Toronto, ON (Tuesday, April 19) – Athlete empowerment brand UNINTERRUPTED Canada, Bell Media and Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) today announced the production of WICK, an original documentary on the life and times of Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, O.C., one of Canada’s most accomplished hockey players and inspiring figures, both on and off the ice. WICK is a triumphant, reflective, and inspiring story which will provide audiences with an intimate and unfiltered snapshot into the world of Canadian icon Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser. The documentary takes viewers on a tour of Wickenheiser’s life journey: from growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, to teaching women in India and North Korea how to play hockey, to contributing to countless charitable causes and choosing to pursue a medical degree, all the while winning four Olympic hockey golds, seven world championships and becoming the first female to ever play pro men’s hockey in Europe. “Everything I have I owe to hockey: the phenomenal opportunities, the grinding setbacks and even my beloved son – the most important thing in my life,” said Wickenheiser. “I only hope to one day give back to the game as much as it has given to me.”  The film follows Wickenheiser in the present day, as she navigates her life as a medical doctor leading the charge in the fight against COVID-19, while also serving as the head of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club. This follows an illustrious career, culminating with a spot forever enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. WICK paints a picture of a mother who captivated a nation every four years, while enduring incredible setbacks, financial hardship, and spearheading the ongoing fight for women’s equality in sport. “Hayley’s story is so much more than just the career of an athlete and hockey player,” said Vinay Virmani, Chief Content Officer of UNINTERRUPTED Canada. “We‘re honoured to have the opportunity to share an in-depth look at her remarkable journey with Canadians and champion her accomplishments as both a player and as one of our country’s most beloved citizens.” Bell Media delivers WICK exclusively to viewers across Canada on TSN and Crave. The hour-long film premieres in Fall 2022. CTC, a long-time sponsor of Wickenheiser, is the presenting sponsor of the film. “As a hockey legend, an international sporting pioneer, and a hero on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hayley Wickenheiser is a true inspiration,” said Shawn Redmond, VP, TSN & RDS. “We’re very excited to team up with two fantastic partners in UNINTERRUPTED Canada and Canadian Tire to give Canadian viewers an in-depth look into her remarkable life story.” “Canadian Tire is proud to present WICK, a film featuring the inspiring life story of Hayley Wickenheiser, an iconic athlete and incredible leader with whom we’ve been fortunate to partner for more than eight years,” said Kim Saunders, Vice President of ESG Strategy, Community Impact & Sport Partnerships at Canadian Tire Corporation. “Hayley’s passion for sport can only be matched by her desire to give back to the community. We have been lucky to work with Hayley on many community programs over the years, from supporting kids getting into sport through Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to furthering gender equality in hockey through WickFest female hockey festival, and even helping protect our frontline workers in the early days of the pandemic. We are thrilled to be partners with Hayley and proud to be part of this initiative which will share her story for all the world to see.”
