KEY STORYLINE: This week, W5 delivers an exclusive look at how calls to 911 may not always prompt the most advanced, life-saving emergency care required during moments of crisis. In W5’s “911 ROULETTE”, Host and Managing Editor Kevin Newman delivers a frightening glimpse into the game of chance that determines who gets dispatched in emergency situations. Contrary to the assumption that a 911 call means access to the most advanced emergency care available, W5 reveals that in most provinces this is not always the case. In Ontario there are three levels of Paramedic Care – Primary, Advanced, and Critical, with the complexity of emergency treatment differing greatly among each level. W5’s investigation chillingly illustrates how every call is like the flip of a coin: dispatchers do not evaluate the level of crisis, sending whoever is up next, and assigned paramedics are required to treat only to the point of their legal authority. In critical moments, this formula can be hit and miss, dramatically changing patient outcomes based on whether the proper degree of medicine is applied – or not. W5 speaks with Pierre Poirier, executive director of the Paramedic Association of Canada, who has been pushing for each province in Canada to create its own college of paramedics. Also this week, W5 looks at the mission and training of “CANADA’S COMMANDOS”. CTV News’ Chief News Anchor and Senior Editor Lisa LaFlamme has an exclusive look inside Canada’s ultra-elite team of soldiers training foreign troops to fight ISIS. Viewers are taken on a behind-the-scenes look at Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) on the front lines in Iraq and training at home at CFB Petawawa. Never before have Canada’s secret soldiers given such access to their troops and training.
