KEY STORYLINE: W5 investigates the monumental and growing problem of cargo theft in Canada, costing Canadian consumers an estimated $5 billion per year.
As retailers across the country gear up for the onslaught of holiday shoppers, thousands of transport trucks will hit Canada’s highways to deliver the goods that fill that demand. Carrying everyday items such as food and household products, clothing, toys, and high priced electronics, these trucks can be very tempting targets for thieves. W5’s HOT WHEELS investigates the monumental and growing problem of cargo theft in Canada, which costs businesses an estimated $5 billion per year – a problem that is ultimately borne by Canadian consumers. W5 checks in with the trucking industry and police forces, examining what they are doing to stop this crime, and also takes viewers along for the ride during an in-progress cargo theft investigation.
Also this week, W5 delivers FATHER & SON, the story of W5’s own Kevin Newman, and the coming out of his son Alex. Following the recent release of All Out, the bracingly honest memoir penned by the award-winning journalist and his son, W5 offers viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the very personal steps and missteps retraced by father and son through writing the book, and the journey to reinventing their relationship and becoming one another’s role models.
Last week’s episode made W5 the most-watched non-sports program on Saturday night, with its up-close profile of Harjit Sajjan, Canada’s new Minister of National Defence, along with the inspirational story of a young Canadian athlete, and a look at Canada’s classic Reach For The Top academic competition.
