TSN Congratulates Michael Landsberg on Induction into Ryerson University’s Radio and Television Arts Wall of Fame

TORONTO (October 16, 2017) – TSN, Canada’s Sports Leader, congratulates veteran broadcaster Michael Landsberg on his induction into Ryerson University’s Radio and Television Arts (RTA) Wall of Fame. Landsberg was formally inducted into the Wall of Fame as one of six new inductees by the RTA Alumni Association in a ceremony held last Saturday, Oct. 14 as part of Ryerson University’s Alumni Weekend. “Michael is one of Canada’s most well-respected broadcasters, and an inspiring champion for continuing a dialogue and reducing the stigma around mental illness,” said Mark Milliere, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, TSN. “On behalf of the entire TSN team, I congratulate Michael on being recognized with this well-deserved honour.” One of the best-known personalities in Canadian broadcasting, Landsberg has been with TSN since the network’s inception in 1984, where he began his broadcasting career as an anchor on SPORTSCENTRE (then called SportsDesk), going on to host more than 5,000 episodes. Landsberg was also host of Canada’s longest-running sports talk show, OFF THE RECORD from 1997-2015. Landsberg speaks publicly about his personal battle with depression and considers his ability to help reduce the stigma of mental illness as his most important professional calling. He has been an ambassador for Bell Let’s Talk, an initiative focused on raising awareness and encouraging dialogue about mental health, since it launched in 2011. In 2013, Landsberg’s documentary, “Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports and Me,” was nominated for a 2013 Canadian Screen Award for Best History or Biography Documentary Program or Series. In 2012, the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health also named Landsberg one of its Champions of Mental Health. Landsberg also takes to Twitter, using the hashtag #sicknotweak to encourage discussion around mental health. Landsberg has since transformed #sicknotweak from a trending topic to a movement with the launch of sicknotweak.com – a forum for those suffering from depression and a resource for those supporting a loved one who needs help. To celebrate his longstanding dedication to promoting mental health awareness, Landsberg was honoured with the Humanitarian Award at the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards. In 2017, His Excellency Governor General David Johnston awarded Landsberg a Meritorious Service Medal, given to Canadians who have performed exceptional deeds, for his mental health advocacy.
