TORONTO (January 30, 2015) – Canada’s favourite hockey broadcasters have morphed into superheroes. Errrr…sorta. TSN’s team of Hockey Insiders and analysts have been transformed by award-winning cartoonist/animator
J.J. Sedelmaier in a new
TRADECENTRE ’15 (#TradeCentre) campaign that makes its television debut in Sunday’s CTV broadcast of SUPER BOWL XLIX. The 30-second spot kicks off the countdown to one of the most anticipated days on the hockey calendar: NHL Trade Deadline Day on
Monday, March 2 (
TSN’s 10 hours of live coverage begins at 8 a.m. ET).

Sedelmaier, a renowned artist, has an extensive body of animation work that includes the first season of MTV’s
Beavis & Butt-Head and the
Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon block
– including the infamous
The Ambiguously Gay Duo for NBC’s
Saturday Night Live, which was co-created with Robert Smigel. The new
TRADECENTRE creative reflects Sedelmaier’s trademark style and was heavily influenced by Saturday morning cartoons from the 1970s, particularly
Super Friends.
“I loved elevating this humble broadcast talent team into the immortals that we all know they really are!” said Sedelmaier.
“We set out to do something totally different this year to make our
TRADECENTRE creative stand out,” said Kieron Mullarkey, Creative Director, TSN. “The
TRADECENTRE team is the best in the business and has some really big personalities – what better way to showcase their characters than through a superhero animation by a super-cool cartoonist? We love the outcome and think it’ll stick out.”
TRADECENTRE is an original Canadian production. TSN was the first broadcaster to deliver full-day coverage of the NHL Trade Deadline, and has since turned the day into an unofficial, nationwide hockey holiday.
Along with debuting new
TRADECENTRE creative during SUPER BOWL XLIX, TSN also rolls out a slate of new promotional spots that highlight major upcoming events in the sports world, including:
- FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CANADA 2015™
- NBA ALL-STAR GAME
- DAYTONA 500
- THE MASTERS
All original promotions airing during SUPER BOWL XLIX were created in-house by the award-winning Bell Media Agency.
Each year, the SUPER BOWL on CTV delivers one of the largest audiences on Canadian television. Last year, more than half of the country watched some or all of SUPER BOWL XLVIII on CTV and RDS – making it the most-watched television program of the past two years with a combined average audience of 7.9 million viewers.
