Every year, thousands of people crowd around Toronto’s Bell Media Studios at 299 Queen Street West for Canada’s biggest summer block party, THE IHEARTRADIO MMVAS. The countdown for the THE2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS is on as the IHEARTRADIO MMVA team prepares to welcome celebrities such as Awkwafina, Alessia Cara, and Shawn Mendes. With talent like this it’s no wonder the spotlight is usually on the A-list attendees, however there are many talented individuals on the other side of the spotlight with jobs critical to the success of Canada’s annual star-studded event.
Below are some of the powerhouse individuals that bring THE 2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS to life:
KALISTA ANTONIUKMy job: I am the head talent wrangler, which means I am in charge of every person getting talent to and from the stage and everything they need in-between!
Best part of my job: I love the chaos. As silly as that sounds, that’s what makes it so fun. There are so many people involved in making this show. The wrangling team alone has close to 90 people. My favourite moment is always the very last performance of the night, that’s the last person to hit the stage so everything suddenly goes quiet, and everyone just celebrates.
Hardest part of my job: Getting everyone on stage and to the red carpet on time. You can pre-plan all you want but anything can happen. Someone can be walking to stage, run into a friend, or want to go to the washroom first. Every second counts, so we have to rely on the team to keep open communication and make it all happen.
Most Memorable IHEARTRADIO MMVA moment: There is too many to name! Most of which I have sworn to keep to myself! However, it was the 2016 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were performing their song ‘Dance Off’, with a planned “dance off” between Lily Singh and Amber Rose to happen during the show. During their sound check we needed someone to stand in as them. Cut to a few minutes later, I see two of my wranglers with walkie talkie headsets on and clipboards in hand sharing the stage with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. I always ask the wranglers to play the part to the best of their ability during rehearsals for timing purposes, and those two danced their hearts out. I have never laughed so hard watching a sound check in my entire time here at the IHEARTRADIO MMVAs.
What I am most looking forward to about THE 2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS: I can’t wait to get working with this new set of wranglers and some new talent we haven’t had before. It’s always a highlight for me. I look forward to it every single year.
TYRONE EDWARDS My job: Co-host for THE 2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS.
Best part of my job: Being on stage and feeding off the energy of the crowd. I also love interviewing the celebrities and learning so many details of their fabulous lives.
Hardest part of my job: All the preparation that goes into co-hosting the show. I have to research all the celebrity attendees and be prepared for anything on stage when interviewing.
Most memorable IHEARTRADIO MMVA moment: When Drake surprised Preme with his first IHEARTRADIO MMVA award.
What I am most looking forward to about THE 2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS: Awkwafina, Awkwafina, and Awkwafina!
GREGG STEWARTMy job: Talent & Artist Relations
Best part of my job: Being around music and talking about music with all the artists that attend the IHEARTRADIO MMVAS.
Hardest part of my job: Juggling schedules for artists in high demand while trying to negotiate artist access for all the Bell Media properties.
Most memorable IHEARTRADIO MMVA Moment: Dropping everything in the last hour of a show to set up for Drake’s last minute appearance to present his friend Preme with an award. Also, being introduced to Ed Sheeran for the first time while he was in his green room literally building a Lego House.
What I am most looking forward to for THE 2018 IHEARTRADIO MMVAS: The moment the voice of god comes on saying that “The following is a live broadcast presentation…”
