Special to The Lede

The chilling tag line for the new season of CTV’s
CARDINAL is, “Six more weeks of winter.” Luckily for TV viewers, John Cardinal is a man for ALL seasons.
CTV has confirmed that
CARDINAL – one of the most acclaimed dramas in the history of Canadian television – is returning for its fourth and final season
Mondays at 10 p.m. ET starting
April 6.
The stakes have never been higher, and the crimes have never been more complicated, as the gripping fourth season welcomes back series leads Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse. Their performances as Algonquin Bay Police Detectives John Cardinal and Lise Delorme, respectively, earned both of them 2019 Canadian Screen Award wins, and they’re nominated again in 2020.
“This all-new season, an unprecedented case unfolds pitting skilled detectives Cardinal and Delorme against a calculated killer,” said Mike Cosentino, President, Content and Programming, Bell Media. “Cardinal and Delorme are presented the most grueling challenge of their careers in the midst of a harsh Algonquin Bay winter.”
A brand new mystery in Season 4 of
CARDINAL, which is subtitled
CARDINAL: UNTIL THE NIGHT, will intrigue long-standing fans of the show, and new fans alike. It’s a fresh opportunity for anyone who loves good television to get to know Cardinal and Delorme, whose personalities are sometimes like fascinating riddles – not just to the audience, but to each other.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Nathan Morlando, Season 4 sees a seemingly mundane missing-persons case turn into a spree of nightmarish murders. The ensuing investigation pushes Cardinal and Delorme to their limits as detectives and partners, forcing them to face what their future holds.
So here are three big burning questions that
CARDINAL fans – both devotees and fresh faces who may be experiencing this fascinating TV world for the first time – will be obsessing about in Season 4 (
SPOILER ALERT – one element regarding the end of Season 3 is discussed):
FOR JOHN CARDINAL: A psychiatrist once described John as “the most dangerous thing in the world: A broken man with power.” And John agreed! But is there any such thing as a happy John Cardinal? Or is he one of those people who simply prefers the shade?
FOR LISE DELORME: Lise has put both her professional and personal lives on hold. Can she even remember what it’s like to put herself first, and rediscover who she is and what she wants?
FOR BOTH OF THEM: Ah, the eternal question, will they or won’t they? Season 3 ended with Cardinal and Delorme sitting on a couch together, eating chili. They could have been watching a romantic movie, but no, they were watching police surveillance video and taking notes. They are alike in so many ways, but does that make them good for each other, or bad for each other? We’ll find out in Season 4!
Set against the bitterly cold and sometimes outright hostile environment of an Algonquin Bay winter,
CARDINAL: UNTIL THE NIGHT challenges Cardinal and Delorme in fresh, frigid, and frightening ways. But whatever happens, this intense series continues to be defined by the term, “icy hot.”
Returning cast members include Glen Gould as Detective Jerry Commanda, Kristen Thomson as Staff Sergeant Noelle Dyson, and Alanna Bale as Kelly Cardinal.
