REGINA (December 31, 2018) – CTV Regina announced today that
Sandra Wankel will receive
2018 Regina Citizen of the Year Award for her exceptional service to the community. As announced during
CTV NEWS AT SIX, Wankel will accept the award at a reception in April 2019.
“Sandra is dedicated member of the community and has improved the quality of life for countless youth and families across the city,” said Jeff Bollenbach, General Manager, Manitoba/Saskatchewan, Radio and Television, Bell Media, who made the announcement during this evening’s newscast. “We thank her on behalf of all those who she has touched with her unmatched generosity.”
Wankel is a founder and the current Executive Director of North Central Family Centre. At the centre, she has helped establish educational programs for at-risk youth and families including the Freedom Writing Program, which aids youth in the advancement of their literacy skills. In addition, her volunteer service has helped sustain the centre’s Marathon Team program, which trains youth to run national and international marathons while teaching essential life skills. Wankel’s service extends beyond North Central Regina, as she has also assisted immigrant families with their local settlement needs, raised funds for humanitarian causes in Africa and the Middle East, and she has taught English to families in India and Egypt.
The
Regina Citizen of the Year Award presented by CTV is an annual tradition now in its 16
th year. Each November, CTV Regina accepts nominations from viewers for the
Regina Citizen of the Year Award, and at the end of December, presents the award to an individual who exemplifies excellence in community service.
