This Just In: Canada’s Walk of Fame Announces Alessia Cara as the 2019 Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour Recipient

Special to The Lede
If Canadian political leaders have done nothing else over the past month, they’ve provided tons of potential material for THE BEAVERTON MOCKS THE VOTE, a new special that debuts Friday at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
Miguel Rivas and Emma Hunter, co-anchors on THE BEAVERTON, had plenty to say about their election special and the weirdness of the current political scene, with the federal election set for Monday:
Q: A record 4.7 million Canadians cast ballots in advance polls. What do you think that means?
Miguel Rivas: “It means that people are jazzed for this election. Or … maybe it has just been so grueling, they want to get it over with. Either way, they’re eager to vote. Once you’ve voted, your guilt is absolved. Whatever happens, you can say, ‘Hey, I did my thing.’ That’s what voting really is.”
Q: Many nations go through this process, but is there something unique about Canadian elections?
Emma Hunter: “What I like about this recent era of candidates pitching themselves is that Canada now seems to be much more passive-aggressive. I really think we can own that, and make it part of our national rhetoric. Everybody sort of says, you know, we’re the nice guys, and the U.S. is very volatile. But if you look closer, we are about as passive-aggressive as you can be, which requires a little more wit, and sneakiness, and intelligence, perhaps.”
Q: So we’re no better than anyone else, we’re just more deceptive?
Emma Hunter: “No, um, we are definitely better. I would like to go on the record as saying that. Absolutely better. We’re just slightly more sophisticated in the way we throw punches. But don’t tell the U.S. I said that.”
Q: Any bold predictions for Monday?
Emma Hunter: “There’s a small chance Justin Trudeau uses the timing of this election to come up with some sort of Halloween costume. Nobody wants that, unless he sticks to something safe and seasonal, like dressing up as a yam. He should probably stay away from the more racially inclined costumes.”
Miguel Rivas: “Here’s my wild prediction – whoever wins, it doesn’t even matter who, they’re going to appoint Emma Hunter as the new Governor General.”
Emma Hunter: “You know what? I’d love that.”
Miguel Rivas: “And she can be bought. Let’s put that out there.”
Emma Hunter: “Absolutely. Even if you have $300 … oh, wait, never mind … my counsel is advising me to quit talking about this.”
Q: Stating your price up front probably isn’t the best negotiating tactic.
Emma Hunter: “You see, this is the type of stuff I need to learn, okay?”
Miguel Rivas: “Another good quality for Governor General: Open to learning!”
Q: Finally, what can viewers expect when they tune into THE BEAVERTON MOCKS THE VOTE on Friday?
Miguel Rivas: “An informed but funny takedown of how silly this election has been.”
Emma Hunter: “Yeah, it’s going to be a party. It’s going to be a party about the parties.”
