MUST-WATCH TITLES FOR SEPTEMBER

September 15 – RAMY *Season 1*

  • Available as a STARZ Exclusive in Canada, RAMY is executive produced, created by, and stars Ramy Youssef, and explores the life of Ramy Hassan (Youssef), a first generation Egyptian-American who is on a spiritual journey in his politically-divided New Jersey neighbourhood. RAMY brings a new perspective to the small screen as it explores the challenges of what it’s like being caught between a Muslim community that thinks life is a moral test and a millennial generation that thinks life has no consequences. Jerrod Carmichael and Bridget Bedard also serve as executive producers.

September 9 – HBO’s THE DEUCE *Season 3 Premiere* (9 p.m. ET)

  • From David Simon and George Pelecanos, the third and final season of THE DEUCE resumes its chronicle of the rise of pornography and the multi-billion dollar industry’s transformation of American culture, seven years after the culmination of Season 2. Season 3 brings viewers into the world of 1985, just as VHS overtakes film as the primary medium for porn production and distribution. The lure of the California sunshine, the city’s aggressive takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square, and devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era. With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before. Following the interconnected lives of Times Square’s barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police, mobsters, porn actors, and producers, the eight-episode third season brings the series’ arc to a dramatic conclusion. THE DEUCE stars an ensemble cast led by James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

A frail Queen Anne (Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah who takes her under her wing and sees it as a chance to return to her aristocratic roots.

September 11 – HBO’s IN THE SHADOW OF THE TOWERS: STUYVESANT HIGH ON 9/11 *Documentary Premiere* (9 p.m. ET)

  • Directed and produced by Emmy®-winner Amy Schatz, this new HBO documentary reveals how it felt to be a young person at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 and explores how the tragic day continues to shape our world today. When the Twin Towers were attacked, teenagers at Stuyvesant High School, located just blocks away, found themselves fleeing debris in the heart of the danger zone and faced with a harrowing journey home. Through intimate interviews, the former students, now adults, many from immigrant families, passionately speak about the backlash against minority communities that followed the attack and the deep friendships with classmates that got them through.

September 13 – SHOWTIME’s MURDER IN THE BAYOU *Docuseries Premiere* (9 p.m. ET)

  • SHOWTIME’s first true crime docuseries from director Matthew Galkin investigates the unsolved murders of eight women whose bodies were discovered between 2005 and 2009 in drainage canals and rural areas around the town of Jennings, Louisiana. The five-part series examines the violent sex and drug trade the young females were victims to and uncovers the secrets of a troubled town, lurking from just below the surface.

  • Created by Jay and Mark Duplass, the late-night, half-hour anthology series ROOM 104 returns with 12 new episodes, telling unique and unexpected tales of the characters who pass through a single room of a typical American chain motel. While the room stays the same, Season 3 features several different stories including a man searching for a cure to his chronic skin condition, the caretaker of an exotic animal looking to make a sale, and estranged siblings reuniting to make an investment.

September 20 – THE LEGO MOVIE: THE SECOND PART *Movie Premiere*

September 25 – HBO’s BUZZ *Documentary Premiere* (9 p.m. ET)

  • The revealing and personal HBO documentary follows Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author, Buzz Bissinger, as he experiences a sexual awakening while collaborating with Caitlyn Jenner on her tell-all memoir. Interweaving interactions between Bissinger and Jenner, the documentary showcases Bissinger’s transformative journey, as he works to perfect Jenner’s book and simultaneously examines his own heteronormative constraints, which test his marriage, family, and sense of self.
