KEY STORYLINE: The sight of wild horses roaming free in the rugged Rocky Mountain foothills near Sundrie, Alta. is a spectacle to behold, and one that is currently under threat. W5’s stunning cinematography takes viewers to the forests and grasslands of Alberta, where fewer than 1,000 wild horses run free across the landscape, traveling as family herds – a living reminder of a time when hundreds of thousands of these majestic animals roamed across the Canadian west.
BORN FREE sees W5’s Kevin Newman leading an investigation into the controversial capture and culling of horses by the Alberta government, who approved the capture of 50 of the 900 horses they counted last year. This is in addition to the 400 horses removed by the government during the past decade. Ranchers claim the horses are eating too much of the grassland that domesticated cattle use to graze. W5 investigates why, with 2.2 million acres of rangeland, the Alberta government continues to remove wild horses from Alberta’s wilderness in spite of calls for the capture to end. And without independent scientific evidence to determine whether the wild horses really are a threat, are the government’s actions bringing them closer to extinction?
KEY STORYLINE: In the evening’s second story, CTV News’ Washington Correspondent Joy Malbon, on special assignment to W5, introduces viewers to Canadian veterans Charlie Mann, Jack Callowhill, Don Ballantyne, and Jim Summersides – four surviving soldiers who were part of the DEVIL’S BRIGADE. The elite special force was the first of its kind – a joint Canadian and American unit that has gone on to earn its place in history as the original commandos, helping turn the tide during World War II. Highly decorated in the U.S., their service and sacrifice are barely remembered in Canada.
The episode follows last week’s W5 exclusive interview with Justin Trudeau, just days after he led the Liberal Party to an historic majority win in Canada’s 2015 Federal Election. Airing Saturday, Oct. 24, W5’s MR. PRIME MINISTER attracted 1.1 million viewers, topping the night as the most-watched, non-sports program in primetime with total viewers P2+ as well as Females 25-54.
