MUST-WATCH TITLES FOR AUGUST

August 18 – HBO’s THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES *Series Premiere* (10 p.m. ET)

  • Created, directed, written, and executive produced by Danny McBride, THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES kicks off its nine-episode season with an hour-long episode, followed by half-hour episodes on subsequent Sundays. Well into the second generation of a grand televangelist tradition, the renowned Gemstone family is living proof that worship pays dividends in all sizes, including their megachurch. McBride stars as Jesse Gemstone, the eldest of three grown Gemstone offspring, who looks to lead in his father’s footsteps, but finds his past sins jeopardizing the family ministry. Playing Jesse’s siblings are Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect) as pseudo-hipster Kelvin, the youngest of the trio and a thorn in Jesse’s side, and Edi Patterson (VICE PRINCIPALS) as Judy, who is secretly living with her fiancé and dreams of escaping the Gemstone compound. John Goodman (ROSEANNE) is Eli Gemstone, the family’s patriarch, who finds himself at a crisis point as he mourns the loss of his wife and questions the Gemstones’ mission.

While the future looks increasingly uncertain, it’s the past that threatens to ultimately destroy them. In addition to Cox, the Season 2 cast includes Jeremy Strong, Hiam Abbass, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Friedman, Rob Yang, J. Smith Cameron, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Arian Moayed.

August 25 – SHOWTIME’s ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA *Series Premiere* (10 p.m. ET)

  • Starring Emmy® and Golden Globe®-nominee Kirsten Dunst (Fargo) and executive produced by George Clooney, the 10-episode dark comedy series is a story about the cult of free enterprise and one woman’s relentless pursuit of the American Dream. Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, the series follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes, and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM) - the cultish, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Ted Levine, Silence of the Lambs) that drove her family to ruin. Determined to make a better life for herself, Krystal dives deep into FAM and develops a tangled relationship with its most loyal and fanatical follower Cody (Théodore Pellerin, Genesis), until her business begins to affect those closest to her, including Ernie (Mel Rodriguez, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH), her affable water park boss, and his FAM-skeptic wife Bets (Beth Ditto, Nocturnal Animals).

August 25 – STARZ’s POWER *Season 6 Premiere* (August 25)

  • The two-time NAACP Image Award-winning series POWER returns for a super-sized sixth season featuring 15-episodes. His former drug partner and brother in arms must pay for the ultimate betrayal. Ghost devotes himself to one notion: success is the best revenge. Ghost aims to get even with Tommy (Joseph Sikora), get the Queens Child Project built to consecrate Raina’s legacy, and finally achieve a thriving legitimate lifestyle with no criminal strings attached. Ghost’s need to wrest satisfaction and happiness from this world by any means necessary is the most dangerous he’s ever faced. As the Feds grow closer to convicting him, Ghost must remain vigilant toward those wanting to take him down for his past criminal enterprises. Joining as series regulars this season are Evan Handler, Michael J. Ferguson, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Mike Dopud.

But he isn’t the only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also hit the radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates (Bradley Cooper). Even as his money problems become a thing of the past, Earl’s past mistakes start to weigh heavily on him, and it’s uncertain if he’ll have time to right those wrongs before law enforcement, or the cartel’s enforcers, catch up to him.
